Goa agrees for permanent rehabilitation of Baina beach Kannadigas

Bangalore, Jul 24: The Goa government has agreed to provide permanent rehabilitation to the displaced Kannada-speaking people from the Baina beach in that State.
This information was given by Karnataka’s Higher Education R V Deshpande in the State Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
Making a statement in the House on the outcome of his visit to Goa to study the problems of displaced Kannadigas of Baina beach in Goa and his meeting with Goa Chief Minister ManoharParikkar, Despande said he had requested the Goa chief minister to take effective steps for the rehabilitation of the displaced Kannadigas in Baina beach.

Deshpahde, who called on Parikkar in Goa on Wednesday, the latter has agreed to extend the stay of Kannada-speaking people in relief camps till the end of September 30 (end of monsoon). 

Later, the displaced people would be asked to take shelter in rented buildings. 

The Goa Government has agreed to provide partial amount of the rent, Deshpande said.

Parrikar had assured him that the Goa government would come out with an amicable solution on providing permanent rehabilitation of those whose illegal huts which were demolished, Deshpande said.

The Goa government had said that all those who are living in hutments at Baina beach for more than five years would be given rehabilitation. 

The Goa government has sought some time to identify land to make arrangements for rehabilitation, Deshpande said.

Deshpande also said he was accompanied by Goa Leader of Opposition PratapsingRane and former Chief Minister DigambarKamat.

Several pro-Kannada organisations protested uprooting of hutments by the Goa government.

BJP Opposition leader in the Assembly JagadishShettar urged the State Government to follow the action taken by the Goa government in the coming months and if possible to contribute amount for rehabilitation of the people.
