Kundapur: Dinesh Putran's invention helps scale electric poles easily

Silvester D'Souza
Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Aug 27: Dinesh Putran Vithalwadi, who has been serving Mescom office at Shiriyara in the taluk, has invented a simple equipment that helps even laymen to scale electric poles without any problem.

During monsoon months, electric cables get snapped either on account of wind or falling trees. Mescom linemen are on their toes during these months, as they receive a plethora of complaints relating to electric supply. Mescom also suffers from dearth of linemen, and many linemen are not skilled enough to scale electric poles made of concrete, which get slippery during monsoon months on account of moss which gets accumulated on its surface. It is not rare for the linemen to slip from the pole and fall down, getting injured, etc. Dinesh Putran, towards mitigating these problems, has invented 'electric pole climber'.

Electric pole climber is a simple equipment weighing not more than 1.5 kg. The instrument is shaped like the letter 'F'. On one side, bolt nuts have been provided to fix the footwear of the person willing to climb the pole. The unit meant for left leg is shaped like F, while the right side is shaped like F in the reverse. The entire instrument is about four inches wider than the pole. When this instrument is fixed to the pole, and someone steps on it, the instrument gets locked and does not slip, irrespective of whether the surface is slippery or not. People can also work by standing on this instrument with one leg, explains Dinesh Putran.

This instrument is cheap too. Total cost of the instrument including footwear, iron bars and labour, does not exceed Rs 1,000. Putran, who has devised this cheap but useful instrument that enables people to go up electric poles in all seasons, has always got involved with various experiments for the benefit of the people since his young days. He has also been involved with frequent visits to schools to explain to the children about ways and means to remain safe from electricity, minimizing use of power, etc. He also has been creating awareness about safety concerns through erecting banners in public places, besides undertaking cleanliness drive, among other things.

He has already damaged the concrete electric pole practicing on it. Such poles are not meant for this innovation (copied or not).
But he is innovative and surely can come up with improved idea that will not damage poles.
Govt. must take note and assist him to do better.

Out of my curiosity I took interest to Google and found out that there are most modern and safe pole climbing gears used around the world. You can also do the same. It is very interesting to watch.

Any ways, Dinesh's share of efforts should not be underestimated. Safety measures should also be in place.

very innovative, But i have a doubt, isn't that device a good conductor of electricity? look at it clearly, though the slipper is made of rubber, the below metal part can come in contact with the body through the screw. God forbid it, but if current passes through the person's body, it will pass to the metal base of the device through the screw.
Can some please enlighten me if i am wrong. if your pressing disagree button, please make sure you put a comment y i am wrong. thanks.

Congratulations to Dinesh for this great invention. Western world do this by mechanised vehicles which carry box of tools to fix electric wires etc. As for a reader's inquiry re: climbing coconut trees, this gadget is not helpful but the Daijiworld had carried a few years ago a different kind of gadget that allowed Kerala women to climb coconut trees in a few minutes straight up. Daijiworld should reprint that issue.

Dear Naveen Shetty, Mangalore, I really appreciate your concern and sympathy towards "lineman", however the vehicles fitted with mobile elevating work platform will work only where there has a access to road, but what about the poles which are in the deep forest, hills or for that matter the place where this vehicle cannot reach....so let us encourage and applaud Dinesh Putran Vithalwadi for his innovation and creativity....keep going Dinesh Puthran....!

Good innovation i must say. Looking at the pictures it looks scary though. It needs to be tested again and again for different electric poles to ensure it is really safe to use. I think this should be used by only linemen (skilled in that area).

For generation the lines men have been using tall ladders to do the job.
Dinesh needs to be rewarded/recognized for his innovative and useful solution of climbing the electric poles. He has to come out with some solution where the poles are round shaped. This may help to climb the coconut trees also.

Good luck Dinesh in your future brain work.

The time has come to stop all these 'lineman' from climbing the poles. They should be provided with vehicles fitted with mobile elevating work platforms so that they are protected from falls and electric shocks. At least these should be used in urban areas if they are not feasible for the remote locations.

We still have to go very long way...till then these inventions will at least help our linemen a bit!!!
