Petrol price cut by Rs 1.82 per litre; diesel rate hiked by 50 paise

New Delhi, Aug 30 (PTI): Petrol price was today cut by Rs 1.82 a litre, the third reduction in rates this month, but diesel rates were hiked by 50 paise per litre.

The revised rates are effective from midnight tonight, oil companies announced today.

With international oil rates on the decline, petrol price was cut by Rs 1.51 a litre, which after including local sales tax or VAT translated into a reduction of Rs 1.82 a litre in Delhi.

Petrol in Delhi will now cost Rs 68.51 a litre from tomorrow as against Rs 70.33 currently.

In line with the January 2013 decision to hike diesel prices till retail rates come on par with its cost, rates were hiked by 50 paise a litre.

After, including VAT, the increase in Delhi came to 57 paise. Diesel will cost Rs 58.97 per litre in Delhi from tomorrow compared to Rs 58.40 currently.

Rates will vary from city to city depending on local sales tax or VAT.

Petrol price was cut by 90 paise (Rs 1.09 a litre after including local sales tax) on August 1 and again by Rs 1.81 (Rs 2.18 per litre, after including VAT).

At Rs 68.51, petrol price is lowest since June last year when it was sold Rs 68.58 per litre.

Indian Oil corp, the nation's largest fuel retailer, said the downward trend in international prices has also warranted a cut in price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) by Rs 19 pe 14.2-kg cylinder. None-subsidised LPG is the one that household consumers buy after exhausting their quota of 12 bottles in a year.

Subidised cylinder costs Rs 414 per litre in Delhi. A 14.2-kg non-subsided LPG cylinder will cost Rs 901 from tomorrow as compared to Rs 920 currently.

Also, the rates for bulk diesel, which is priced at market rates, was cut by Rs 1.32 per litre in Delhi. As per government policy, bulk users like railways, defence and state road transport corporations buy diesel at market price, which is higher than pump rates.

@ RSRB - Answer my question.

Modi has given Mr Adani 15,946.32 acres of land for Rs 1 to Rs 32 per sq m, waiving aside all rules and regulations.

In comparison to this Rs 1, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, TCS, Ford India and Torrent Power have paid between 670 to 6,000 times more per sq m. Gujarat Government reports state that other than the Adani Group, no company has been given land at such throwaway prices.

Under Mr Modi's rule, Mr Adani's fortunes have flourished, rising from $765 million in 2002 to $8.8 billion in 2013. Is this Mr Modi's definition of being pro-business and pro-market?

Economists describe such actions as - 'denying the right to competitive bidding and giving favours to just one industrialist as crony capitalism.'

    Is this his Acche din????

Any ordinary person knows that all public transportation uses diesel and not petrol. If growing vegetables in the backyard solves the problem then yes, its a good idea :)

Prices of essential commodities will only increase with the increase in the cost of Diesel as Transportation costs will go up, thereby impacting the cost of food items and daily use items, further burdening the common man.

Price reduction of petrol mainly benefits the rich and the upper middle class.

Government should not ignore the economically poor, the middle and lower middle classes.

What about 2010 and 2011 crude price fall? They are more than what happened in 2012...

Crude rate in 2010: 82 USD
Petrol rate in 2010: Rs. 55
Crude rate in 2012: 82 USD
Petrol rate in 2012: Rs. 75

Crude rate remained same in 2010 & 2012. Why the petrol rate in India increasted from rs 55 to 75?
This is Karma Kaanda of Congress.

Increasing 50 paise per litre for diesel every month until the cross subsidy is eliminated completely is Veerappa Moily's idea, stolen by BJP. The government must come up with a policy how long this will continue and the mechanism of price adjustments in line with international prices and dollor exchange rates.
Rationalisation of taxes, efficient operation of oil companies must be seriously considered to reduce the cost further.

    Read this :

"Crude oil prices plunged by more than four per cent in the last fortnight as exports from Libya are recovering despite the recent unrest. On the other hand, unrest in Iraq has yet to disrupt significant amounts of oil, though some small fields have been shut in the autonomous Kurdish region. On the production front, OPEC output rose to a five-month high above 30 million barrels per day (bpd) in July and U.S. crude production averaged an estimated 8.5 million bpd, exerting downside pressure on prices. Overall prices remained in a negative territory and MCX crude oil prices declined by around four per cent and closed at Rs.5679/bbl".
