Bengal gang rape: Five get 20 years' rigorous imprisonment


Kolkata, Sep 19 (IANS): A West Bengal court Friday sentenced five people convicted of gang raping a girl twice in North 24-Parganas district of the state to 20 years' rigorous imprisonment.

The 16-year-old victim, daughter of a taxi driver from Bihar, was raped by a gang Oct 25, 2013, in Madhyamgram of the district. The gang violated her a second time a few days later after her family filed a police complaint.

The court of additional district judge (Barasat) Shantanu Jha pronounced the sentence after the five accused were convicted Thursday of kidnapping, gang rape and criminal conspiracy.

They were also fined Rs.5,000 each and in default, would have to undergo an additional year in rigorous imprisonment.

The girl later set herself ablaze Dec 23 and subsequently died of her injuries Dec 31.

The victim's family had met President Pranab Mukherjee seeking death penalty for the perpetrators.
