Mumbai, Nov 8: A 42-year-old computer science graduate who once aspired to become an IAS officer and even tried his luck on the popular television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati has been arrested for allegedly stealing a gold chain worth Rs 5 lakh from a jewellery shop in Mumbai.
The accused, identified as Satish Kumar Krishnaprasad Kesari, a native of Bihar residing in Uttam Nagar, Delhi, was arrested by Kandivali police in Delhi nearly a year after the theft. He holds a BTech degree in computer science and had reportedly been struggling with mounting debts following losses in his travel business.

Kesari had pursued his dream of becoming an IAS officer while working and preparing for the UPSC examinations but failed to clear them. He later participated in Kaun Banega Crorepati, hoping to try his luck on the show. However, he could reach only the 'Fastest Finger First' round and could not make it to the hot seat.
After suffering heavy losses in his travel business, his financial liabilities reportedly increased. Unable to repay his debts, he allegedly turned to theft as a shortcut to make money.
According to the police, Kesari would visit reputed jewellery stores posing as a customer, examine ornaments and allegedly steal them when he found an opportunity. After succeeding initially, he reportedly continued using the same method.
On November 15 last year, he allegedly visited Padmavati Jewellers on Mathuradas Road in Kandivali West and stole a gold chain weighing 43.2 grams and valued at around Rs 5 lakh.
Following a complaint by the jeweller, Kandivali police launched an investigation. The accused allegedly attempted to evade detection by using forged documents and a duplicate identity card. He also switched off his mobile phone after the theft and travelled to Delhi.
Police analysed CCTV footage and technical evidence to trace his movements. Based on the leads, a Mumbai police team conducted a raid in Delhi and arrested him. The stolen gold chain was also recovered from his possession.
