France envisages airstrikes in Syria: Minister

Paris, Sep 25 (IANS): France will probably join the US-led coalition's bombing on Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Thursday.

Speaking over RTL radio, Le Drian said France's possible participation in the military offensive in Syria was "on the table", Xinhua reported

"The opportunity is not there today. We already have an important task in Iraq and we will see in the coming days how the situation progresses," the minister added.

Last Friday, French President Francois Hollande gave the green light to his air force to launch first airstrikes against militants in Iraq.

Hollande was scheduled to head a cabinet meeting on security to assess Paris's military operation in Iraq and to lay out ways to ensure the safety of French people at home and abroad.
