Public opinion to be sought on legalisation of prostitution: George

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (RJP)

Bangalore, Oct 15:“There has not been any debate in the government level as per the legalisation of prostitution is concerned. But public opinion on the issue will be respected,” said the home minister K J George in Bangalore on Tuesday.

“I have heard about the debates in various public platforms. I cannot say much about the issue now. But the government always respects the public opinion. At present, the decision on legalisation of prostitution cannot be taken.” He added.

Only on Monday, Mathe Mahadevi, the lone woman pontiff of Lingayats from Basava Dharma Peetha in Koodala Sangama had urged the government to legalise prostitution to curb the rape menace.

“I am not the first person to suggest legalisation of prostitution. Demand has come from several sections of the society. Unless we legalise prostitution, rapes and sexual harassment of women cannot be stopped. Legalising prostitution is the best deterrent to rapes,” Mathe had said.

Mahadevi also had demanded that the government set up a special committee to examine her suggestions.
“Ideally, the government should look into the aspects to solve the problems faced by the society. We need long-term measures to tackle these social evils.” Mathe had opined.

Mahadevi on the same occasion had also said that women were inviting unwanted attention and becoming soft targets for perverts and sex criminals by wearing skimpy clothes. These comments on clothes issue had attracted objection from various quarters.

Last month, the Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Umashree had confirmed about the reports of setting up a committee to look into the possibility of legalising prostitution. The Minister had said that committee would comprise of experts and would give the report on the pros and cons of legalisation of prostitution. After that nothing much was heard on the issue from her.

Many are with the opinion that the legalisation would stop rape and crimes so on.....

I don't agree this.... Even in the brothels who are forced into the trade are raped but now who speaks for them? I am in the NGO where we rescue minor girls from sex trade. They are raped everyday.. They are forced to entertain 15 to 20 customers daily though they are between the age of 12 to 16.....

Who has a voice for these girls.. They are not few rather there big number of girls who are pushed...

Not all the policemen are into this business... There are really good policemen who help in the raids and rehabilitation of these girls..

    Let us think broadly..

I strongly disagree in legalising sex trade... The girls and women who are lured and forced into the trade justcwait for an opportunity to come out of it. I have heard their stories which is really heart breaking. They are not interested to be in the trade. Once they are sold to the brothels they are blackmailed saying there is no life for you. You be looked down by the society. So they remain in the trade not by their choice rather by force. So they look for a chance to escape from it and to be mainstreamed and to do a decent job... We have to respect their feelings and life rather than going by the statement of the one who might not even met or spoken to the girls and women who were into this trade...

If they are in the brothels just for six months also the level of traumatization and depression is like that of 20 years... So guys lets oppose this idea of legalisation and lets support these girls and women with various opportunity to lead a decent life..

Let the govt have better programmes for girls and women in supporting their future life...

No one wants their mother, sister's to be prostitutes but still we still have lots of prostitutes in the society and they are mothers and sister's of somebody. At the moment there is no control over the prostitution and the prostitutes are exploited at the moment by pimps and police. If by legalizing these prostitutes are freed from the control oof vested interests then we all should welcome it...

Government should consider the prostitution is not a legal issue rather a moral issue and adopt a hands off policy. Whether it is legal or illegal, the impact on flesh trade is minimal. We all know the prostitution is uncontrollable and sex is the biological need of human being.

In USA there are male prostitutes too. It is called escort service. Many single women take vacation to Las Vegas and book escort service, where a young man pick her up from the Airport, be with her and satisfy all her needs for a price. It is all legal in some designated US States.

    Prostitution should NOT be legalized
I'm not sure where to begin, so I'm just going to make a list.
    1. By legalizing prostitution, you are agreeing to using women and girls as merchandise.
    2. Would you want your daughter to think of this as a profession...because if it is made legal it could become as normal as working as a secretary!
    3. Emotional turmoil. After having sex with man after man after man after man, I’m sure that it will lower your self esteem.
    4. Prostitution comes with a lot of wrong. Murder, drugs, and sex.
    5. If someone wants to be immoral they should have a legal right to do so.
If any one of you can honestly claim that you'd be okay with your mother, sister, daughter or wife becoming a prostitute, then this world has gotten far darker than I had ever imagined. I’m not trying to make anyone feel guilty, I just want to share what I believe is true.

Prostitution is the oldest profession which exists every corner of the universe including our own country. Legal or illegal no one can stop a unsatisfied male or a female as well from to going to a prostitute if he or she wishes whether married or single. There are female and as well as male prostitutes who openly advertise their services on the Internet in India with photographs. Many of our law makers are hand in glow with this illegal industry. If it is made legal then they will loose their hafta and favours which comes free with it. There will be
winners and also loosers if it is legalized. So criticism of the minister at this stage is undesirable therefore give him a tome and allow him to do his job. Let us see what happens. This is my personal opinion.

With legalisation of this 'sex racket' small time vendors like:
    Sellers of 'Vada Pav'
    Dahi Vada...
    Lemon Mix...
    Soda...
    Charmuri...
    Tekkare...
Biscuit and all types of Ambaddes
    Kori and Kori Rottis...
    Towel and Blankets
    Handkerchiefs, etc etc...
and other small timers can do brisk business.
Why are you all laughing? I am serious.Economy will boom.
Brisk the business at Licensed Brothels, Brisker the business outside.
Along withit, dispensaries like Kokar's, Amrut and the like will also florrish.
VD and skin doctors will have a field day. Field means their 'field' only o.k. What did you think?? If skin and VD doctors go there ..who will cure the regular 'customers'??
Just like when stock maket opens
at 9a.m, when many people will be queing to place their orders before the terminal, here also at 'Brothel Terminal' also customers will be placing their orders. Is it not?
    What an idea by George!!

Opening discussion about legalisaton of prostitution in Karnataka is a good sign.
Instead of having sex under the the Sun, now whoever want to have sex, can do it on their free will , once it is legalised in Karnataka.

One ruler in Middle East told his subjets about few decades back, I have given u mosque to pray and follow good path. At the same time, if there are immoral thigns happening on your own will, it is your choice.

Similarly, those who say, prostitution is immoral, we have place where one can practice moral spiritual things in their own place of worship.

Hope that prostitution will become legal as it will reduce rapes and many unwarrnted police, ministrial, legal interference.

    Prostitution legal and regulated
Prostitution (the exchange of sex for money) legal, but organized activities such as brothels and pimping are illegal prostitution is not regulated
    Prostitution illegal
    No data
In India, prostitution (the exchange of sexual services for money) is not illegal,[1] but a number of related activities, including soliciting in a public place, kerb crawling, owning or managing a brothel, pimping and pandering, are crimes.[googly)

Legalising prostitution is a very big black mark on indian society and culture. Families will loose stability and women who struggled hard to maintain and unite thier children husbands will loose their husbands to legal prostitutes. Family values will break and men will not take the responsibility to maintain his family values. House wife's will suffer and there will be no fear left in the society of doing wrong, no guilty consciousness.

A good, thoughtful decision by this minister who is otherwise useless though.
The accessibility to internet/internet porn in India is wide, easy and cheap. It is available to all through any cheap smartphone. But at the same time the accessibility of a sexual companion is not that wide in India, because of social restrictions. The frustration is depicted in the rising incidents of rapes.
Hope legalising prostitution also to some extent prevent men persuading women into illicit affairs.

There are many postings branding prostitution as Moral wrong. To them let me say MORALITY IS NOTHING BUT LACK OF OPPORTUNITY. This may not be completely true but as far as prostitution is concerned one should appreciate that this was prevalent in the world for millions of years. Moreover, the need of prostitution is more now than anytime before. Young persons get marry at a very late stage - generally after 30 years of their age and can you imagine that they are wasting their prime sexual years without having an opportunity. Sexual requirement is biological and the need is more when a person is young. If prostitution is legalized there will be a definite reduction in rapes and also sexual assaults. All are aware that sexual assaults happens within the family, within homes, schools. Generally Indians are sex starved and I am sure if they have an opportunity to avail this facility legally, people can divert their energy to positive tasks. Could you imagine the planning needed now to take your girl friend to a hotel or to a resort. You have police and more than that moral police haunting you. I is your personal choice. Legalisation with proper provisions like health check ups financial planning is necessary.

Why some people are sarcastic about legalized prostitution? As if nothing is taking place in M'lore. (not openly) Let all the illegal & hidden joints come to an end, even police sometimes do not act appropriately.

Crime is crime if made legal or not.
If parents say lets legalise robbing because children rob very often. Does this make sense.
It will be inviting wrath of Almighty to legalise a grave sin.

Rape incidents do not happen only in metro cities where prostitution is widely thrived. Rapes also do take place in villages where prostitution is not common or not at all available. If legalizing prostitution is the best deterrent to rapes, then govt has to encourage brothel business in every village and every town to prevent rapes. It is foolishness and do not legalize prostitution. It is a sin.

    Legalization of prostitution means:

A COMMODITY IN ONE OF THE MARKET PLACE FOR SALE.

The price depends upon how much good looking the commodity is and also how it beguiles the customer.

I am entirely against legalization of prostitution.
    Morally prostitution is illegal.

I dont know what culture you are talking about, but ours is a culture which wrote Kamasutra. And if you read the book, there are some procedures involving more than two people. so you cannot possibly think that Prostitution was a taboo in ancient India. Prostitution is infact worlds oldest profession.

But here I don't think that legalizing prostitution is a good Idea. Actually legalizing does not mean that we should allow prostitution to be a money making business. Legalizing should actually mean keeping a legal check on the industry, by making sure Kids are not used, human trafficking is not involved or women are not abused in the process. That should be the actual meaning of legalizing.

But corruption is so imbibed in our current culture that legalizing prostitution in current situation will lead to more socio-economic problems than it will solve.
