Mumbai: ISIS sympathiser who discussed terror plot arrested

Mumbai, Oct 20 (PTI): The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad has arrested a city-based software engineer, who admired the middle-east terror group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, for allegedly conspiring to blow up US establishments here including a school.

Anees Ansari (24) who worked at a multi-national software company was apprehended from his office in suburban Andheri and produced before a court yesterday which remanded him in police custody till October 26, an ATS official said today.

The online chats of Ansari, whose office job involved designing navigation maps, hinted at a plot to target US establishments including a school in suburban Bandra, the official said.

Ansari was booked under section 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) read with 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code, and relevant sections of Information Technology Act.

He sympathised with ISIS fighters and described, in his online conversations, the Americans as tormentors. ATS also seized his computers, a mobile phone, and has obtained `mirror images' to extract the data.

"Our team that keeps a close watch on online posts sometime ago got the wind of his shady activities which suggested that he had been chatting with two persons based in UK and Australia who have been indoctrinated to believe in the extremist ideologies," the ATS official said.

The online discussions about a plan to target an American school in the city alerted the ATS, which led to his arrest.

The ATS officer claimed that it had gathered enough evidence to suggest that Ansari had been chatting -- through a Facebook account in a fake name -- about punishing Americans and defending the ISIS which according to him was the victim in the current turbulence in Syria and Iraq.

"A lot of Jihadi material, videos and literature related to ISIS and its leaders was shared with him by the two people who were chatting with him for nearly two years," the officer said.

"His online interaction clearly indicated his ill-intentions but we are verifying how well he has prepared himself to execute the plot. Our interrogation would focus on the places he had visited, the persons he had met and the reasons therefor," the officer said.

Ansari lived in suburban Kurla with his parents and two younger siblings, and according to sources, he had applied for a passport a month ago, which has led the investigators to suspect that he planned to leave the country to support/join the ISIS.

In May this year, four youths from neighbouring Kalyan town -- Arif Majeed, Shaheen Tanki, Fahad Shaikh and Aman Tandel -- had left India to visit holy places in the Middle East, but disappeared thereafter. They are suspected to have joined the ISIS. On August 26, Majeed was reportedly killed in bombing.

You are too sympathizing with the youth who wanted to enter into terror activities. There is always a conspiracy theory to fool innocents like you. When US Twin tower attacked, same people like you wrote thousands of blogs explaining its a conspiracy by US to malign Muslim community..!!!

You might know that there is no US people training Jehadis like Bhatkal and Madani. Whatever they does is because of their own wish.

Now the point BJP malign the Muslim community???? BJP or Hindus never hated peace loving Muslims. What Hindus and Catholics like me done is hating people who involved in Cattle trafficking, Terrorist activities etc. Did u ever heard a Hindu hit a normal peace loving Muslim guy. All they did is beating people who involved in illegal activities. If Muslims stop dreaming of Gulf to be their home country and Love India as they love Gulf everything will be beautiful for them.

Sometimes people are carried away by emotions...by recent trend in media and political parties especially BJP used Muslim community as whole to look bad in front of people....I too get enraged when someone makes my community look low but what a common muslim need is sabr or patience this is what God loves rather than getting enraged by this idiots comment .....Secondly america is no innocent it has lot of bloods in its hand....On one side country like it honour malala where on other side it killed innocent school going little children and innocent people....One time it supports so called freaking Jihadi idiots like Taliban, alqaeeda or ISIS or So called Islamist in north africa and when their work is done these people become terrorist...and when these people go out of control....you use special word...."Islamic terrorism" wasnt it Islmic terrorism when you people needed their help when you people funded them, when you people provided ammunition...
America looks at its interest simple analogy is how modi is denied and later given welcome with red carpet...
I think this guy got emotionally carried away by things happening around the world...First of all who is that two guys who chatted with him...??
If it all he thought of blasting american school it is idiotic and disgraceful...calm down...you cant dream of blasting a school coz it as american as tag...There are whole lot of good americans we can only blame establishment...People need to counsel this guy rather than making him much more agressive coz it will make further more people to alienate......If you arrest with harsh clause coz someone made idiotic comment in a chat...OMG...Whole lot of guys in social forum need to be booked by same anology some of them are much more aggressive than it...

When India is putting all its 'intelligence' efforts to apprehend terrorists and their sympathisers who are a threat to US interests why does the US not give India protection/support in EQUAL measure to protect India from terrorists who infiltrate across the LOC with Pak army support and attack our soldiers and civilians ???
I believe the US is just using us without equal reciprocation.
Having said that India should never allow terrorists to use our country to plot against any nation.
