Mangaluru: ATM card frauds, phones are ringing everyday

Daijiworld Media Network—Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Nov 4: Only two incidents of ATM card frauds have been reported to police in the recent past. But as per reports, ATM frauds have been taking place on regular basis. But the phones asking for ATM card numbers are ringing every day. Many people are complaining about the phone calls being received.

On November 1, the fraudsters found a prey in the form of a Karnataka bank account holder, a resident of Maroli. As per reports, the unknown person phoned the victim in Hindi saying that he was a Karnataka bank officer. The victim was told that he had been allotted a new ATM card. The victim upon insistence gave his 16 digit ATM card number to the fake bank officer. It was discovered in next fifteen minutes that Rs.25000 was withdrawn from the victim’s bank account. Later the phone call was tracked to have been originated from Jharkhand. There has been no response from the mobile of the fraudster.

The same type of incident was reported on October 20 where a Corporation bank account holder lost Rs.24, 595 in Mangaluru. Shashi from Kumpala lost the money from his Corporation Bank account from Hampankatta branch. Shashi received a phone call on October 2 in Hindi saying that his account number had been changed. When Shashi said there was nothing wrong with the account they insisted that they knew better as they ‘spoke from Corporation Bank ATM department’. Ultimately Shashi gave his old account number in ‘exchange’ for the new one.

Soon after that Shashi received an SMS saying an amount of Rs. 2,020 was withdrawn from his account. By the time he reached the bank to enquire about the withdrawal, he had already lost Rs.24,595. The multiple withdrawals were in this order- Rs.2, 020, Rs.1, 500, Rs.1, 100, Rs.1, 475, Rs.8, 000, Rs.8, 000, Rs.1, 000, Rs.1, 000 and Rs.500.

In the past the police and the banks have repeatedly warned the public never to reveal any bank details over the phone.

And now a person named Mahabaleshwar Bhat from Badanaje Vittal has revealed to the media that he also received a call from fraudsters. He has requested people to be careful while attending these calls. The fraudsters are known to talk sweet. Beware of them.

Please keep in mind, no bank asks for your ATM card number or its PIN number.

The leakage of data could be from the following:
    1. Banks employ outsourced staff for- Canvassing new a/cs, Loans, Credit Cards, Insurance, etc.
    2. Outsourced staff have access to the information of existing customers through Bank source.
    3. The data is shared to get cross selling done and to deepen relationship.
    4. The outsourcecd staff takes soft copy /photocopy such customer information and desert their job.
    4. They pass on this information to expert hackers, for a fee.
    5. Sharing of information and selling of data is a big business now.

I got a call from a number ( 911204981277) claiming they were from a bank and wanted my card details. I immediately declined to share anything. They claimed they can link my debit card to a new card so i get discounts on any purchases done. This is a technique to fool people into giving their card/account details. Please Beware!

We were warned by Bankers, that's true but without they knowing how outsiders know the accurate details of an account and other information?? from where the information is being leaked? Bankers simply says that people have done an online transaction and where they have entered all the details. But the question as to how an Online transaction without valid genuine information and verification has been accepted by Bank systems? when they accept a thrid party systems access to the bank information, they should do necessary validation as to what information is being captured by the third party and it is the responsibility of Banks to implement such secure measures. But in India every one blames the average common man for their ignorance.

All those who have a smart phone please download "TrueCaller" app as it helps you most times (90%) to identify what name the caller is registered in the network. Most of such calls are automatically rejected when I get such calls. Even if their names are not saved in your contacts, It does give a fair idea as to who is calling. Besides also helps when you get spamming calls etc...

Police just register the complaint of the victim and forget the matter. They never try to catch the tricksters from far off Hindi land even though they have the phone number of the criminal.

Karnataka Police are also responsible for the increase in such frauds as they never go to North India and try to catch the culprits even though it is possible to catch them with the phone number given by the complainant and also the purchases made by the culprit through online purchases or directly from Shops, as the online shops have address of the culprit to whom they have sent the goods, and the spot purchase shops have CC cameras.

All these fraudsters are from Jharkhand, Bihar and U.P.
That is why they always talk in Hindi only. If you reply only in English or Kannada they disconnect the call.
Some such fraudsters call and say that you have received Cash Bonus on your LIC Policy or some Company Share and hence your Account number is required to credit the same. People should not entertain even such calls.

How can money be withdrawn only by account number or debit card number. A PIN is always needed. If these frauds are happening only by account/debit numbers then banks are having lax security. They should be penalized not the account holder.

My thoughts exactly. How can anyone withdraw money from your account just knowing its number? Lot of people know my account number. But the PIN and the three digit security code is not revealed to anyone. Are these who lost their money are too shy to reveal that they have revealed those details also to the callers?

I totally agree with you both. Either they have revealed the pin.

Other chance is there should be a person in bank associated with caller to do these transfers by fooling the customer that you have revealed the account number. In this case a inquiry can reveal the truth.

Duping apart, how do these people get the database of account holders including their phone nos. and other details like bank name and branch, which would be required at the least to instill confidence in the targetted victim without somebody from 'inside' divulging the details to these fraudsters!!

Off late, numerous incidents of very sr. insiders having been involved in multicrore bank frauds have been reported, so the greed of making quick money has now seeped into our erstwhile honest banking system right up to the higher echelons!! Jai Hind!!
