Udupi, Nov 26: The regional transport office (RTO) held a meeting at Atal Bihari Vajipayee auditorium, Rajatadri here on Wednesday November 26 to receive grievances related to transport and road safety.
The RTO received applications regarding road humps, no horn zone, uncertainty in auto fares, pre-paid auto system, need for maintaining quality roads, new bus stops and extension of bus stops, considering need for additional auto stands, and safety measures to prevent road accidents.
Dr R Vishal, deputy commissioner (DC), who presided over the meeting, said that rumble strips could be laid on national highways instead of humps. "The road construction work is in passive mode while land acquisition process has been completed. "A little amount is pending to be paid as compensation," he added.
He further said that three measures have to be taken up in order to control road accidents - humps along the edges of the national highways (to some extent), usage of proper signs, and installation of concave mirrors to spot far away things.
The DC added that there is need to ensure strict enforcement of laws.
Sudhir Kanchan, social worker, appealed for stern action in reserving seats in buses for adults, the disabled, and women. Supporting this, the DC said that the conductor will be responsible for passengers’ security.
Dr Vishal further said, “We have considered public interest and public conveyance while enforcing transport laws. During the extension, variation, and modification of roads, a joint survey is necessary.”
The RTO decided on increasing the vehicle’s life (as per the report of MC Mehta report) from 12 years to 15 years.
About 134 cases have been discussed out of 305 applications received. These include 55 fresherss, 24 about variations, 9 about court remands, 2 about transfer, 23 on revision of times, 13 about pending for renewal, one for counter remands, and other cases.
R L Dias, president, Railway Yatri Sangh, submitted his petition on providing buses to and from Parkala to Herga and revival of government mini bus from Udupi to Mangalore.
SP Rajendra Prasad and Arun Kumar Singh, district regional transport officer, were present.
