Bengaluru: CM joins Archbishop in condemning anti-conversion law, Good Governance on Christmas

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Dec 24: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah joined Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras in roundly condemning the SanghParivar mooted proposals on bringing a "selective anti-conversion law" and the NarendraModi regime’s moves on observing "Good Governance Day" on Christmas Day, which is celebrated universally as a festival of joy, peace and love.

Participating in the pre-Christmas get together organised by the Archdiocese of Bengaluru under the dynamic leadership of Archbishop Moras, who is also the President of the Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council (KRCBC) and Karnataka United Christians’ Forum for Human Rights (KUCFHR), the Chief Minister declared: "India is a secular country. Freedom to practise and propagate faith is a Constitutionally guaranteed right. There can be no compromise on the secular values, ethos and principles of the country."

Adhering the Constitutional rights and the country’s secular values enshrined by the framers of the Constitution, which included stalwarts like Dr B R Ambedkar, should not be construed as appeasement to any one community or religion much less be dubbed as vote-bank politics, he said and asserted that the Congress party would never allow any attempts to dilute or abrogate the Constitution in any form.

The Chief Minister, who was accompanied by Home Minister K J George and Information, Haj and Infrastructure Minister R RoshanBaig, joined the Archbishop of Bengaluru in cutting the Christmas cake after Archbishop ceremoniously placed the statue of the new-born babe of Jesus Christ in the Crib tastefully prepared the St Germains High School, said it was wrong to target any particular community, caste or religion for conversion, when one is free to opt for any religion. Any forcible conversions or those induced by allurements can always be dealt with under the law, he said making it clear that nobody chooses their religion before birth.

"Birth Accidental, We Don’t Choose Our Religions"

"I am a Hindu because my parents are Hindus while my colleague RoshanBaig or K J George are Muslims or Christians because they are born into their respective families and in the same way Archbishop Moras happens to be a Catholic because he is born in a Catholic family," he said and pointed out that the Constitution allowed people the freedom to profess and propagate their faith.

"It is wrong to divide human beings into narrow caste, religious or communal barriers. It is our bounden duty to be good human beings," he said.

Endorsing the views of the Archbishop Moras on the NarendraModi Government’s moves on observing the day of Christmas festival on December 25 as "Good Governnance Day,"Siddaramaiahridiculed the idea of singling out a particular day, which is celebrated throughout the world as a day of peace, joy and love by all people and not just Christians.

"What About Good Governance on Other Days?"

The Chief Minister sarcastically asked: "Why observe Good Governance Day only on one day and that too on a Christmas Day? What about all the 365 days in a year? Can Good Governance be forgotten during rest of the year? The mandate for the (BJP) Government is for a period of five years and Good Governance can never be ignored."

Siddaramaiah criticised the Modi regime for their blatant attempts to hurt the religious sentiments of one community and said such moves smacked of sinister designs and the motives will always be suspect in the eyes of all people irrespective of the logic or justification presented.

Archbishop Moras, in his address, made it clear that "all of us are against forceful conversions," and wondered: "if persons, on their own free will, wish to embrace any religion of their choice, how can we call or label it as fraudulent conversion?"

"Why the U-Turn Now?"

"We strongly oppose any such move tooth and nail to safeguard the secular fabric of our nation. If we are not making our opinions known to others, especially those in power, the anti-conversion bill will be forced upon us. The present Central Government leaders very clearly mentioned in their election manifestos that they would preserve the secular nature of our nation if they came to power. But why they are making an u-turn now?," he asked and warned that the Government was bent upon forcibly introducing anti-conversion law and create communal tension and polarisation of the entire country.

Without naming any religion, the Archbishop asked: "Are not the religious heads of other religions propagating their religious tenets to the people here and abroad and make them embrace the religion they propagate? What explanation do they wish to give for it?"

In a pointed reference to Prime Minister NarendraModi’s declaration of observing December 25 as "Good Governance Day," the Archbishop asked why the Christmas Day was chosen even though "it (the idea of Good Governance) is a good move."

"Normally we celebrate December 25 as a Universal Day of Peace, Joy and Love. These aspects of Christmas have to be highlighted and all have to be encouraged to become ambassadors of these divine gifts," he said pointing out that the style of functioning of Jesus Christ must be remembered for good governance as he was an example for all.

"Jesus is model of Good Governance"

"Yes, he (Jesus Christ) is the Greatest Leader and the CEO of all time and he is our role model, an inspiration to the administrators, especially those holding public office. His style of administration was done with love, acceptance, openness, respect, mutual trust, simplicity, sacrifice, accountability and transparency. All these qualities are very essential for all those who are called to serve the public," he said.

"Today, I am happy to mention that our Christian organisations are following the teachings of Jesus Christ and they are engaged in good governance," the Archbishop said adding: "My message to all of you is: Let us shun quest for popularity, recognition, worldly wealth, pomp and glory and celebrate Christmas with simplicity, holiness and renunciation of all desires. May we see God in the needy and the poor and reach out his love to them."

Earlier, Home Minister K J George and Information, Haj and Infrastructure Development Minister RoshanBaig and former minister and chief secretary J Alexander spoke. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner M N Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar, DGP Fire Services Om Prakash, Judge John Michael D’Cunha, former MLA Ivan Negli and several senior police and government officials attended the Christmas get-together. Msgr C Francis welcomed the gathering. FrMahendran, Secretary to the Archbishop, proposed a vote of thanks.

..My brother, first TOI reported the news with a misleading Headlines, but news content said some thing different..when whole thing got messed up, once again TOI clarified, but still justified it news..opposition parties which is hook & crook want to oppose Govt for each & everything used this opportunity..but this time they used Christians shoulder & Christians danced to the tune..so called educated, intelligent men not took time to ask the Govt directly about the issue..they will invite, garland & happy to allow political leaders to use religious function use for political purpose..but they are not ready to meet Govt or official to get a answer..when a Nehru birthday can be celebrated as Children s day then why cant Atalji birthday as Good governance day..there is lot of activities related to Children day in school, if suppose Nehru born exactly on 25th Dec, what Govt/school would have done..when controversy crop up within few days BJP Govt clarified Holiday not cancelled, its a rumour..only there is directive to conduct activities on Good governance so that students participation in national building, there is no instruction of physical presence..being a HINDU i just cant imagine anyone can cancel CHRISTMAN,DIWALI OR EID Holidays..If still some have problem, then it is a paranoia against Govt nothing more..if you hurt by my comment i am sorry, but by reading your comment i felt that you didnt know ATALji bday was on 25th Dec thats why you asked why 25th Dec is Good Governance not other day..anyways,nothing personal..MERRY CHRISTMAS to you & all my DW friends (who likes & dislike)..

Can’t be December 25th celebrated other than Christmas only? Did they ever say that Christmas can’t be celebrated on 25th December? There should be limit for argument you lol!!!!!

Oh Sympathiser, I hope your comment is meant to me i suppose. In your effort to hind yourself behind a pseudonym i think you forgot even to mention my initials. Now coming to the subject i think questions which you posed to me u better pose it to your leader who has raised this controversy. I want to ask by declaring Dec 25 as good governance day has anybody objected Christians from celebrating Christmas. Ask this question to those who created the controversy and get an answer. And i think i dont need your sermon what to do with my religion. Moreover you and your ilk might have voted for Congress all these years. Dont presume what is applicaable to your and your cohorts applies to all. There are people with independent mind. For your kind info i am an accidentally born christian. Only thing is my forefathers were converted forcibly.

Mr. Ramesh: I do sincerely appreciate those people who are reading my comments if the response negative, still I greatly appreciate as an indirect compliment.

I am a little bit older than Mr. Modi: exited from the college campus about half a century back- traveled to a few countries-in India through the poorest villages-met a lot of people of different colors and religions-both rich and extremely poor so the brain may be getting weaker due to over-exertion as you have indicated.

Though I write comments in the Daijiworld for long, also I write comments in many of the leading news papers in the Gulf region, papers like the Economic Times of India etc. If they think that I am writing nonsense from a weird mindset, they will not publish that.

Please check with the Economic Times of India, how before anybody said, I said that the gold price would be declining from $ 1850.00/oz, and within weeks it came down to $ 1250.00/oz.

While everybody was telling that the oil price was going to increase, very affirmatively I wrote in the months prior to June 2014 that the oil price would be plunging. Indeed, I didn't know that the oil price will plunge like this.

Well, your logical explanation is quite confusing and adding more confusion.

Exactly on the Christmas day which is a national holiday in India for years, when the school students are instructed for the first time to do something related to their education as well as the Government's "good governance" day etc then do you think that Christmas is regarded fully as a national holiday?

In Kerala, Onam is a State holiday which is basically an Hindu holiday, if Christian school are under instruction to have classes, what you think?

Probably, my brain is not strong enough to understand your explanation there will be millions of people, both young and old in that category like me in India from all religions and political parties.

I LOVE YOU MY FRIEND. WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A MERRY CHRISTMAS.

It is time that the Congress Chief Ministers in India, pass a legislation to pass on the reservation and its benefits to the dalits who have converted to other religion as done by MR Chandrashekar who has openly d and extended the benefits to the dalits who convert to christianity. The greatest religious discrimination is visible in India.

If a poor person is not an Hindu, his or her poverty is not an issue for the Government! How, the non-Hindus can be rich in a country where 33% of the poorest people who are living with $ 1.25/day?

This is to keep the poor people under Hinduism, thus enslaving their fundamental right of following the deity of their choice.

When people of any religion apply for financial help or food stamps in the U.S., being a majority Christian country, no question of their religion is asked. When the politicians of India will get the real sense to treat their own Indian-born people to treat with love and compassion by overlooking the poor people's religious affiliation?

By declaring Dec 25 as good governance day , has anybody bothered you? or asked you to be a part of governing body on Dec 25 ? It won't take the brain of a rocket scientist to read the underlying motive of the BJP Government's deliberate attempt to berate Christmas, and to take off Christmas from the holiday list in India in course of time to hurt and terrorize the Christian community of India which is the most celebrated event in the world on the 25th of December.

The non-Christian citizens of India representing many different religions are in total perplexity due to these mysteriously critical actions of the Government of India
in its secret strategy to wound the minorities.

Exactly on that 25th December, "good governance" day? Well, that was a "bad governance" decision!

Its time that the CBCI takes strong objection to mixing politics with religion by the NDA government at the centre. Victory in elections doesn't mean they have a mandate to undo the constitutional safeguards to promote, propagate and profess one's religion.Good Governance means a Corruption free Government managing the affairs of the Nation as per Constitutional Norms. It is not School vapasi and Minority baiting vapasi. People are awaiting the vapasi of black money promised by Mr Modi. If he fails Modi vapasi to opposition benches is imminent.

Being a Christian why should I fear? Fear means death. Why I should be sad? Sad Christian is a bad Christian. We should be happy that on this great day Government wants the elected representatives to visit their constituency and organize events about Good governance. If possible we will join to give our thoughts of good governance on that day, if not, the loss is for us. Why we have to fear about agendas? Trust in Jesus. Nothing will happen. All our friends, neighbors and citizens of this country have only one Religion - the human religion. We have different faiths but there is only one God. If we are targeted by a few, I am sure majority will take care of us. Don't worry, be happy. Wish you Merry Christmas and happy new year

All that i can say is that, the BJP lead NDA govt at the centre only proved itself in bad governance(to say the least a malign mentality) through its deed (by declaring Christmas day as good governance day, without prejudice in my opinion our honorable ex PM AB Vajpeyee's birthday is only an exuse to neutralise the guilty sense).
I really don't understand why BJP being a responsible political party having thumping mandate to rule Hindustan, try to change the DNA of Hindu's towards other peace loving & kind hearted religious group (specially Christians).
Though i may be wrong, in my opinion Christians in Hindustan may be just 2.5% but there are at least 25% Hindustani Hindu's who not only like them but also love them.
If my views hurt any of my fellow Hindu brothers, I beg your unconditional apology.

why is such a communal color to a "good governance day" to be marked on a great leader like Vajpayee's birthday??/

I dont know why Bishop had to make such comment.. nObody here is ridiculing Jesus Christ or christians!... it is divine coincidence that boble soul like Vajpayee was also born on that day!

Does anyone make such hue and cry.. do we even know when is "Mahavir Jayanti, Buddh Jayanti, Guru Nanak Jayanti or basava jayanti or Ram Navami?" do we even care here.. specially when, all these faiths and religions were BORN here in this land!... Celebrating good governance is a MOST SECULAR IDEA!! rather than limiting a day for our festivals!

we dont even have national holiday for those Jayantis I have mentioned!..were they any less spiritual? .. instead we have nat holiday on Christms, Good firday! .. Moharram, Eid, and all....

Hindus never asked make Ram navami a national holiday, so that HE IS ABLE ADMINISTRATOR etc!.... this is too much of a ask!... Let Jesus Christ be a UNIVERSAL phenomena.... let us all celebrate his birthday too! enjoy, make merry... but dont trivilaise, this and let go a "GOOD GOVERNANCE opportunity"!

this siddu will do any thing for votes!... he does nothing for his own KANAKADASA though!

    Luke 2:14
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

    Dear all,

Cease to work on this auspicious day.
Confess your sins, keep fasting, indulge in prayers and supplications, rejoice in the coming of the Prince of Peace. Jesus will govern us and the government is on his shoulders.

    John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

    Prophet Isaiah 9:6
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Jesus the first and the last.
He was born miraculously in this earth and will appear once again to show His Glory and power to all humans.

End time Jesus will appear in his fully glory with his full army to eliminate the Anti-Christ and will rule the earth lawfully and righteously.
Glory to Him and His name be Glorified.

Some of the Central government office are working on this day. One holiday on Chritmas will be a great deal for this government. Just because Christian population in India are quiet and peace-loving people, this government thinks they can do whatever they please with them. Good Governance is essential for the smooth running of a democratic set up. Christmas is celebrated as the festival of common man as God decided to dwell among the poorest of the poor by taking birth in Bethlehem city in a manger and after finishing a life full of love and compassion God ed to die on the Holy Cross and risen from death on the third day to show the triumph of life over death and living among us all people irrespective of caste, creed and religion and advice us to follow him by loving each other. So let us celebrate the Good Governance of our Lord with faith and simplicity. All are welcome in his kingdom and nobody leaves bare handed from his office. Let us give thanks to God on this Good Governance Day and rejoice in the Lord because he is good to all irrespective of the good and bad. Merry Christmas to all and a happy new year 2015.

Merry Christmas. Joy to the world. And peace to all people of GOOD WILL.

Christmas message - let us abide.

I do think smart Indians are able to understand 'Good Governance Day and the timing'.

If it is with 'motive', then let us not deny it - let us stand tall with our conviction, denying a motive is like a CHEATING. Christ said 'what goes into the mouth doesn't harm', but what 'comes out' harms. The words and acts, show the intentions.

If it isn't with 'motive', then the timing is rather suspicious. Good Governance day could have been observed, irrespective of 'in power' or 'out of power', by those who wanted to celebrate the two leaders.

God gives 'long rope' before reigning in. It happens in our individual lives too. Let us pray that the 'reigning in' isn't harsh.

Luk who is talking. People who are supposed to talk about love peace and harmony object even to observe good governance day on December 25. Agree Christmas is observed all over the world. It does not mean to say we dont work on that day. UN celebrates Human Rights Day every year which does not mean we dont have human rights in the remaining 365 days. What about fathers day, mothers day, childrens day and all the stuff. Dont we have fathers, mothers and children in the remaining days. And about majority of Indians who dont celebrate Christmas. Why Christians leadership is so narrow minded that they try to find fault with everything the govt does. Earlier govts used to celebrate only Id at the cost of tax payers money. And now Christmas. If Hindu festivals were observed this way these fanatics would have wagged their tongue liberally.

    Jossey,

Don't comment on DIWALI DAY. Diwali is festival of lights. We celebrate Diwali with sweets and lights. Barack Obama also celebrated Diwali inside white house.

Vajapayee was born on Dec 25 and to mark his good governance govt is celebrating this on his birthday. Don't give communal or political color to this.

As for as christmas is concerned it is the festival of peace, love and harmony. We all Hindus support and stand by you. Diwali, Christmas, Eid, Ramzaan, Janmastami, Ganesh Fest are the festivals of prosperity. People born on these days are believed to be lucky and fortunate.

My Mama had twins born on Dec 25th, 2007. He is over joyous and considered himself lucky because kids are born on Dec 25th. Every year he comes from Mumbai to celebrate their birthday. This is year also he is present in Kundapur.

I am an owner of an IT company. I d holiday tomorrow though I don't have any christian employees. But I work on Christmas, Eid, Diwali, Ganesha Fest, Ugadi, Makara Sankrathi, Dasara, almost 365 days of the year. It is left people to work or not.

Ideally you should take it positively that Good Governance day is falling on great day of Christmas. Some cheap minded people like Siddaramayya are making the peoples fools and misleading to earn their bread and butter. Don't fall prey to such dirty tricks of dirty politicians.

Happy christmas to you and your family..!
