Judgement Day - Salman Khan arrives in court ahead of verdict on accident case

Mumbai, May 6 (NDTV): Actor Salman Khan left his Bandra home in his white Mercedes Benz this morning for the Mumbai sessions court, which will give verdict on whether he is guilty of running over pavement dwellers with his SUV 13 years ago. (Track LIVE updates) One person had died and four were injured.

The actor - who flew back to Mumbai yesterday from Kashmir, where he has been shooting for his new film Bajrangi Bhaijaan - sat in the front of the car which drove out slowly as supporters crowded around. His driver Ashok Singh, who has told the court that it was he and not Salman who was driving the car that day in 2002, drove the actor to court this morning.

Salman Khan, 49, faces charges that include culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

The prosecution has alleged that it has strong evidence that Salman Khan was drunk and driving back home from Juhu late on September 28, 2002, when he lost control of the car and ran over men sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery.

The prosecution claims that Salman Khan fled the scene.

Salman Khan told the court that a "false case" has been filed against him. "I was not drunk... I was not driving, driver Ashok Singh was at the wheel... I was at the spot for 15 minutes after the accident," he said.

Driver Ashok Singh, who is the only defence witness in the case, said in court, "I was driving when the accident took place... the tyre burst and brake jammed. I narrated the incident to police but was made to wait at the police station. I suspected foul play and informed Salman about it."

The prosecution presented many witnesses.

Abdullah Sheikh, who says he lost use of a leg after being hit by the car, told NDTV he wants his life rebuilt. "... If he is punished, I will not get my leg back. We want relief, not punishment for Salman Khan," he said. (Read)

Friends and relatives poured in to meet Salman Khan at his Mumbai residence last evening and today. Among them was actor Shah Rukh Khan.

Reports suggest that over Rs. 200 crore is riding on the mega-star, who is believed to have seven films in the pipeline, two of which are in production.

Indian Judiciary is not always perfect. First of all the case is 13 years old. Why kept so long? Just imagine. Secondly there are many who have killed many and yet they are free. Salman has definitely made good for the family. He has to come out Innocent becuase he is a human being.

If prosecution able to establish that THEN DRIVER ON THE WHEEL(SALMAN),then there are two reason for conviction 1)Negligence in driving max 2years in jail and eligible to get automatic bail..If convicted on culpable homicide not amounting murder, then max 10 years no bail. This case could land mark because if Salman convicted there would be message that how big your car or how big your bank balance law is equal to all.Let us wait and see another 1-2 hours. However, either way it has effect on film industry.
