Mangaluru: 'Ghar Wapsi' at Konaje - Catholic family embraces Hinduism

Mohan Kuthar

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 8: Muchilakody in Konaje here witnessed conversion of a Catholic family into Hinduism a la 'Ghar Wapsi'.

It has come to light that five members of a Christian family turned Hindus in the presence of activists of some Hindu organizations on Wednesday May 6.

Saraswati, Rajesh (22), Raji (25), Rati (23) and Rakesh (18) were the members of the said family who opted to become Hindus.

Puja rituals were undertaken at the home of the family at Konaje on Wednesday in preparation for admitting the family into Hindu fold, in the presence of Sri Rajashekharananda Swamiji of Vajradehi Mutt Gurpur, and activists of Hindu organizations.

Raju, who happened to be a Christian, had loved and married his neighbour named Saraswati, who was a Hindu, about three decades ago, when living near Kollam, Kerala. Although Raju had promised to become a Hindu after marriage, it is said that he converted his wife into Christianity instead.

The family thereafter shifted base to Muchilakody near Konaje and Raju began working here. Two male and two female children of the family, who were born after the couple shifted to Muchilakody, attended churches and participated in Catholic religious programmes. Even after Raju breathed his last about nine years back, the family continued to attend church programmes.

Rajesh, son of Saraswati, said that the family members were attending the church for a few years after their father died, but the family had been continued to be identified as belonging to Christianity in the neighbourhood. "I have many friends in a number of HIndu organizations. We are identified as Billavas in many places, and the religious conversion had been conducted as per the volition of the family members. We were not forced to become Hindus by anyone, and we have opted to convert on our own in our own interests," he explained.

After the rituals, a pedestal with Tulsi plant was installed in the courtyard of the family home, and picture of Hindu gods was placed inside the house.

It is learnt that Rajesh was in love with a Hindu girl from Ira in Bantwal taluk since several years, and the two had decided to marry as per Arya Samaj customs. When Rajesh and his elder sister had visited the house of the girl in Ira about one and half years back, some locals had assaulted them, charging them with trying to convert the girl into Christianity. A case had also been registered in Bantwal police station regarding this assault.

Charan, don't you think the "Ghar Wapasi" agenda, a political not a faith based movement, itself is an anti-national? Do we need 18 spineless people to convert 5 gullible who lost their direction? Are they happy? Why no one is smiling except one? (Perhaps he is like that only)

Do these 18 take the responsibility of 5 to lead a good Hindu life? Then I am happy with whatever they have done.

A good Hindu is a good Christian and a good Muslim too. Conversion is immaterial.

Daiji had published the headlines wrongly saying Catholic family embraces Hinduism. It should have been Protestant CSI church.

As per statement by Rev John Sadananda, former bishop, CSI, said: According to church sources, the family receives pastoral care.

"Three children were brought up in a CSI boarding home. A girl was married a Bajrang Dal member and one is in love with a Hindu girl and this may played a role in reconversion. Pastor William Kunder, who worked at the church for two years from 2006, said: "The family attended church service regularly and received communion."

We wish them all the best. Let they live with dignity.

A friend in need will be friend in Deed. Difficult times will only give them right answer, who are friends , who are foes.

Catholics have not built the community but only concentrating on building structures. No attention is given to individual families and their problems and also in the matters of faith. When they feel neglected, this is the result we see. Only when the day comes for these huge structures are given for sale or used as halls as in the west, we will realise the mistakes. Many of our religious leaders are in a dream world without any spiritual touch who are supposed to be shepherds and are under materialistic spell. What we see now may be only the beginning.

    Some things to ponder on.
    - The reason for this is Vatican 2, read and learn what happened
    - Christ never fails in any of his promises
    - Matthew 16:18 "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
    - Matthew 28:20 "...and behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world. "

I really encourage all those Christians who do not live a Christian life to go back to whatever "Ghar" they belongs to. We don't need quantity, but quality. Quality that makes difference in the life of poor and downtrodden. Christian religion is the religion of humanity sharing and caring. That is what the Lord Jesus Christ taught us to do.

Ronald, once upon a time a fox wanted to be a tiger. So, he approached the tigers groups and tigers accepted him. The tigers colored his skin so that the fox would look like a tiger. When all the tigers start roaring, fox (new tiger) also try to roar. Then the little tiger cubs start teasing the the fox(new tiger) saying that "HE LOOKS LIKE A TIGER BUT NOT A TIGER"

Frustrated by the teasing, the fox (new tiger) decided to go back to fox group. The fox group accepted him back, but couldn't remove the tiger color on his skin. When all the foxes start barking, the fox (old new tiger) also start barking along with them. Then the baby foxes start teasing the tiger looking fox saying that "HE BARKS LIKE A FOX, BUT HE IS NOT FOX"

The moral of the story is not to loose your identity. If you are Koraga, be proud to be Koraga or if you are Brahmin, be proud to be Bhahmin. People will respect for what you are. But, don't let anyone put you down just because what you are - Brahmin or Korago. It wasn't your choice.

For Ronald, it is better to stay in Christianity and enjoy the Tava fried Sannas and Sorpotel with a sip of Cashew Fenny with Limca. You will never find this even if you go to heaven!

Just because British ruled for 200 odd years, it would have been difficult to coerce Indians to change religion. most of the Sepoy or soldiers of the British were non Christians. had they coerced there was likelihood of mutiny just like what happened in 1857 when soldiers were given food laced with pork and beef. Britishers were clever enough to divide and rule the Indians based on religion.

@Sam, Ghar wapasi is coming back home where he/she belongs to, from where he/she was converted to. Ghar wapasi takes place after the conversion. Conversion can happen forcibly or due to the circumstance like they mentioned in this artcle or hoping for better life which turned out to be miserable and decided to come to their original home.

    - Every person (including the beggars) comes back home where he/she belongs to, from where he/she was converted to. Thus every person in the whole world is doing 'ghar wapsi' and it is not unique to Hindus.
    - To purposely say conversion is forceful shows your faulty and deliberate twisting of what conversion is. Conversion is always a willing act and never with force.

Religion is a path to salvation & enlightenment of soul or seek the path of God to journey towards to Creater. Human beings are just creatures and we really on source of Gods providence, asking for his most mercy. What we see is nothing but blunder or blackmail to poor or left out people and offering some kind of relief for financial support, for this one kind of force is working behind to make publicizing the issue, it is nothing but just blind belief and brain wash to public. As human beings all must seek Gods way of life and to be ready to go back by purity of soul, all religions call for this only.If ignorant people come to know this then they will give guide to those who try or work for this cause. As human beings need to hold good upright sense and work for others by doing good works to others, reaching to their difficulties and by serving them by love and loving the nature. by doing this we will have and hold the eternal joy within, this is what need of the hour on earth work for others for the betterment or uplifting them from difficulties on any places. We need to reach others by giving support not by any show. All people has to go back is called Ghar wapsi forever to shine in the presence of God, this is mission of work. Those who know this and wish to seek Gods face all are doing this work, those who don't understand and making mockery of salvation is nothing but ignore/ reject the call of God. He calls to everyone come all who thirsty in spiritually come and seek and will satisfy. This is message, if they miss their bus and try to change just by color is nothing but taking bath and remain in same darkness.Best wishes to all humanity please please please seek Gods call and follow his inner voice within surely we will rejoice every movement of life. please try to follow of inner voice of God, he needs you to do follow his call, the preparation towards to conversion re conversion in religion is nothing but just brain wash. God is Love, that is why he calls.

    Dear Ivan,
you said & i quote" As human beings all must seek Gods way of life and to be ready to go back by purity of soul, all religions call for this only"

All religion means Hindus also included right?

why then say " if they miss their bus and try to change just by color is nothing but taking bath and remain in same darkness"

Did the family here become non religious people ? they just changed their religion it shouldn't matter to you going by your own statement.

I can see through despite the contradiction. why not be blunt and say converting to Christianity is moving from darkness to light and converting from Christianity to other faith is moving to darkness.

Again you are highlighting wrong things from Vedas and Upanishad.

Vedas tells about Brahman and not God. God is not the right word in Vedas because God means some supreme personality.

In your isslam may be one God and he have messengers.

Vedas tells both saguna and nirvana about Brahman. It guides one to find who he is first and not like Islam.

There are instances I have come across like the one published today wherein children of mixed marriages living in areas particularly dominated by one of their parents faith have a tendency to be inclined and identified towards that group/society as a sense of belonging. I have seen many instances such as these and that is the right thing to do because children of dual faith/ethnicity parents must opt for the one that best suits them for the sake of commonality instead of living a split personality.

Based on the karma during the life journey between mother's womb and earth's womb human will be taken to heaven or hell.
    All are children of God.
There is no shortcut or visa facility to heaven.
Being we are in the 21st century let us pray and live with help of holy spirit. God bless us all.

Mr Orton, is there something called original Christian?. So there you are. so the new converts will be placed in a different pedestal than Christians a century ago or may be from the time foreigners came here into India. So the class system will prevail no matter which religion you belong to.

May be Orton won't believe Lord visited 'Mathura' 'Kashmir' and other places in India to seek knowledge of 'Spiritualism'.

Let him inform about Long Lost Years.

Parag Mulki., there are thousands of lords in Hinduism. That too varies from village to village. Not only lords, not only that taking rounds to Trees, Stones etc. If creature is become creator there is no point of arguing in your comments.
