Doha, May 11: Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC) Qatar in its quest to bring out new talents and promote Konkani culture and create awareness through competitions conducted its 2nd phase of 9th annual talent competitions recently at the Skills Development Centre. Indeed, it was great to witness enthusiastic community members from all age groups come forward to showcase their talents in different competitons.
This year some new competitions like hair styling, poster competitions on social issues theme and fancy dress for adults with a theme of Mangalurean traditional wear were introduced and surely crowd witnessed some fresh talents galore at this competition. The competitions lined up were hair styling, fancy dress, poster making and singing competitions.
The anchor of the evening was Patrick D’Souza who opened the program in his own unique style followed by an opening prayer from Kavita Tauro. President Norbert Corda then welcomed the gathering. Mishal Lobo, joint cultural secretary then briefed the day’s events and read out the general rules of the competition and also introduced the judges of various competitions.
The hair style competitors were brought to the stage to display their art in hair styling and were given a chance to speak about the styles they worked on. Judges Janet Fernandes and Melicia Menezes too shared their opinion and congratulated the participants for their skills.
Fancy dress for kids below 6 years were held under the theme 'healthy food' and indeed it was heartening to see little kids coming to the stage dressed as per the theme and giving good message. Adults added colour to the event with their display of talents based on the theme 'Mangalurean Traditonal wear' and it was good to see our olden tradition and culture showcased through their acts. As noted by judges Antony D’Souza and Alwyn Goveas it was indeed admirable to see the creativity and originality in terms of both costume and theme and appreciated the efforts taken by parents behind the creativity.
Poster competition had the theme to make posters on 'social issues' to create awareness and it was amazing to watch the teenagers think creatively and work on issues they brought out in their posters. They were judged by Antony D’Souza and Melicia Menezes and gave some good suggestions.
This was followed by the Konkani singing competition. Children and adults with their amazing talent coupled with melodious and fluent singing regaled the audience. Each and every contestant was greeted with huge round of applause and as they wound up their singing, the audience again went berserk with applause. There was a good response in all categories and it really showed that Doha has seriously got immense talent and the only thing these participants required is a platform to perform and display their hidden gifts.
The judges for the singing competition were Norbert Pereira, Joyce Mascarehnas and Sonia Prabhu. All the 3 judges gave their feedback and valuable suggestions to the contestants and also appreciated for the opportunity given to be part of the competition.
All the judges were felicitated with mementos by president Norbert Corda and thanked them for their presence. The president then spoke on the occasion and thanked all the participants for their participation and making good use of the platform provided to showcase their talents. He also advised that it is encouraging for organizers to organize such competitions when there is voluntary and active participation from members. He then thanked the cultural committee headed by Riana Pinto and her team and all the excom members and volunteers for their contribution in organizing the competitions successfully over two Fridays.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Mishal Lobo. Time keeping was managed by Jason Lobo, Anita Quadros and Ronald D’Souza. Registration desk and lots was handled by Winnie Saldanha and Dephny Lobo while all tabulations were managed by Raj Maxim and Prakash Noronha. The sound and music was handled by Christi Lobo and Arun D’Souza.

Cultural secretary Riana Pinto announced the results and congratulated all winners. She then invited all the winners to the stage for the photo session.
