Wheat procurement: Punjab crosses 100 lakh tonnes

Chandigarh, May 14 (IANS): Food grain state Punjab has procured over 100 lakh tonnes of wheat this season, while neighbouring Haryana has surpassed its procurement target for the season by procuring 66.53 lakh tonnes, food and supplies officials of both states said here on Thursday.

Punjab has procured over 100.38 lakh tonnes of wheat this time and is targeting 110 lakh tonnes this year, about 10 lakh tonnes less than last year.

Both states have procured nearly 167 lakh tonnes of wheat so far, despite initial concerns of damage to wheat crop due to erratic weather conditions in March and April.

Officials in Punjab said that Rs.10,224 crore had been disbursed to farmers and commission agents so far for the wheat procured.
