Mangaluru, Jun 2: Dakshina Kannada chief judicial and sessions court here has sentenced a person accused of printing and circulating fake currency notes of Rs 100 denomination. Jason Peter D'Souza (34), a resident of Padumeremajalu village in Bantwal taluk, has been ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years.

On February 21, 2013, Jason had tendered a fake currency note of Rs 100 value towards payment of two mobile recharge cards he bought from a shop located by the side of the Perar arch in Paduperar village. Owner of the shop, Chandrahas, got suspicious about the currency note tendered by Jayson, called him back, and checked with him. To his horror, he found that the accused was in possession of six more fake currency notes of Rs 100 denomination. Thereafter, Chandrahas filed a complaint in Bajpe police station.

During their investigation, the policemen found that Jayson was following the practice of creating fake currency notes by taking color xerox copies of original notes in the machine he had installed in a rented building near Bajpe police station. The accused was arrested, and the then Bajpe police sub-inspector, Anant Murdeshwar, had completed investigation and filed charge sheet in the court.

District chief and sessions judge, Uma M G,who conducted hearing in the case, awarded rigorous imprisonment to the accused under sections 489c and 420 of Indian Penal Code, apart from levying a fine of Rs 10,000.   In case of failing to pay this fine, the accused will have to serve an additional three-month term of simple imprisonment.  This judgment was passed on Monday June 1.

Chief public prosecutor, Pushparaj K Adyantaya, had represented the prosecution in the case and placed arguments.

Jason, who had earlier been released on conditional bail, had violated the conditions of bail by failing to appear in court even after service of summons. Therefore, he continues to be in judicial custody since July 11, 2014.
