Bengaluru: FKCA joins ICUF in urging Pope Francis to 'defrock 2 un-Christian' priests

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jun 21: In the continuing war of wielding pressure tactics against the pro-Kannada elements in the Archdiocese of Bangalore, the Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations (FKCA) and the Indian Christian United Forum (IUCF), led by social-activist T J Abraham, have sent a petition to Pope Francis demanding "de-frocking" of two Catholic priests for their alleged "Un-Christian" activities and behaviour.

FKCA Chairman Edward D’Souza and IUCF President T J Abraham, who met the Archbishop of Bangalore Dr Bernard Moras along with the other office-bearers of the two organisations on Sunday, submitted their memorandum for forwarding to Pope Francis in Vatican and listed their charges and justification for demanding the de-frocking of the two priests Fr Chalkere Chowarappa Selvaraj, who is widely known as Fr Chasara, and Fr A Thomas.

Releasing copies of their memorandum to the media, the leaders of the two organisations claimed that the two priests were "working for the division and downfall of Catholics by publicly disgracing the Catholic Church in Karnataka" and argued that Frs Chasara and Thomas were guilty of "demoralising and driving several Catholics away to other protestant denominations."

The others, who were part of the FKCA and ICUF delegation, are Silvial Noronha, ICUF Vice President, Ms Aida Margaret D’Cunha, Dolphy D’Cunha, FKCA Vice President, and Arun Fernandes, FKCA Secretary.

Welcome to Language Policy Circular

The leaders of both organisations have also expressed their heartfelt gratitude for finding a permanent solution to the a long pending issue in Karnataka through the official circular, "Promulgation of Particular Legislation based on the latest and final Directives issued by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Vatican – As a Language Policy for the Liturgy in the Archdiocese of Bangalore," that was issued by the Archbishop in April this year.

The memorandum sought to bring it to the notice of the Pope that they had earlier submitted similar demands through separate memoranda to the Bangalore Archbishop in April last year and to His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias Archbishop of Bombay in May last year.

"It is our belief that the Archbishops of Bangalore and Bombay have forwarded the same (memoranda) to your Holiness but it appears that the memoranda have not been acted upon by the Papal Authority till date. Hence, we are compelled to draw your attention to the issue, which deserves to be taken up at the earliest in the interest of the Catholic Church in Bangalore and Karnataka," the leaders of the two organisations said in their memorandum.

They expressed their "deep sense of regret and distress at having to submit this representation on some of the burning issues pertaining to the Archdiocese of Bangalore, especially the “Un-Christian” activities of some of our own consecrated priests, along with some lay Catholics and also unconcerned, unconnected people belonging to other religions" and requested that the points made "after serious thought and deliberations" be given serious consideration and acted upon immediately in the interests of maintaining the unity, dignity and sanctity of the Catholic Church, as well as to reinstall the faith and confidence in our faithful."

Fall-out of Fr K J Thomas Murder

The cause for submitting this representation began as a fallout of the investigations by the Bangalore City Police in the gruesome and most brutal murder of a highly scholarly, erudite, peace-loving, well-respected and mild priest Rev Fr K J Thomas, the then Rector of the St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore, on the midnight of March 31-April 1, 2013, within the precincts of the Seminary itself.

"The ghastly murder of Fr K J Thomas by the assailants and the ransacking of his room and other rooms in the Seminary by the attackers and the inability of the police to crack the case and track the suspected murderers had shocked and saddened not only us but all peace-loving citizens in the city. On that occasion, a large number of organizations had organized candle-light vigils and other forms of protests, offered prayers and Holy Eucharist for the successful completion of the investigation, amidst a strong suspension that some priests and other powerful persons within the Archdiocese and possibly in other Dioceses were either directly or indirectly involved in the ghastly murder of a Fr K J Thomas," the memorandum said.

It was in these circumstances and after almost a full year since the murder of Fr K J Thomas, the Karnataka Director General of Police and Bangalore City Police Commissioner and other top police officers announced the arrest of three persons, including 2 priests – Fr William Patrick, Parish Priest of the Kengeri Church, and Fr Elias Daniel, belonging to the Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD) - and a layperson Peter, for the murder of Fr K J Thomas, at a widely publicized news conference on March 21, 2014,

"With this the faithful as well as the clergy and religious brothers and sisters could heave a sigh of partial relief, with the assurance from the police that "the investigation would be completed soon and more arrests would be made in the due course,” it said.

Raising Funds to Save Arrested Persons

However, actions of some of our own priests and laypersons, who publicly took up the cause of those persons accused of murdering Fr K J Thomas, through statements in the media that the arrested persons were innocent and started collecting/mobilising huge sums of money on the pretext of engaging Senior Lawyers to fight the case of the arrested priests and also to give assistance to their families had "deeply pained, shocked and angered" all sections.

"The money so collected according to reliable sources till the month of May 2015 is around Rs 83,29,350 with most or over 75 % of the amount is alleged to have been swindled by the two priests Frs Chasara and Thomas," the memorandum contended.

"It is these priests, FrChalkere Chowrappa Selvaraj (Chasara), Parish Priest of St Joseph’s Church in Chamarajpet and FrA Thomas, Parish Priest of Kristha Karunalaya Church Jaraganahalli, Kanakapura Road, who is also the Principal/Trustee of Christ School, Marianapalya Road, Kaglipura, privately owned and run by his own Carmel Seva Sangam Trust, Mariapura, who are the ring leaders and the main trouble-makers in the Archdiocese of Bangalore," the memorandum said.

It said these persons were doing it "for their own selfish reasons and ulterior motives of gaining positions for themselves and their supporters, including some of the behind-the-scene kingpins, who are angling for key Ecclesiastical positions in the Archdiocese, and spearheading the Anti-Catholic trouble in our diocese," it said adding: "These are leaders of the so-called self-styled Kannada Catholicara Yajakara Balaga (Association of Kannada Catholic Priests), who have been causing trouble in the Archdiocese for the last several years and one of the two arrested priests, Fr William Patrick, was the Secretary of this Balaga or Association, and Fr Elias Daniel, a key activist."

These persons have been masquerading as crusaders of Kannada in Churches and have been misguiding people by shamelessly causing violent protests, law and order problems, all in the name of getting primacy for the Kannada language in the liturgical celebrations in our Catholic Church. It is no secret that "their violence was actually a mask for making money because, their violent actions have not spared even genuine Kannada speaking Priests from becoming victims," it said.

In the Christ the King Church, Yeshwanthpur, which is adjoining St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, these people have gone to the extent of pouring acid on the then Parish Priest, Fr Lawrence Noronha, and obstructing Holy Eucharist at St John the Baptist Church, Vijayanagar, and physically assaulting and attacking Fr C Jacob, a Kannadiga priest, while conducting a service in Kannada, in the StMary’s Church at Hegde Nagar and several other churches over the past several years, especially and intentionally during the Holy Week Liturgical celebrations preceding Easter or Christmas celebrations, and wondered if anyone fighting for the cause of Kannadigas attack Kannadiga Priests while celebrating a Mass in Kannada?

The memorandum claimed that the priests with their anti-social supporters, including non-Christians such as Kannada writer Chidananda Murthy, Pramila Nesargi, Pundalika Halambi and other busy-bodies like Kannada Rakshana Vedike President Narayana Gowda have been threatening of holding protests and demonstrations on the streets even after the release of the circular, which has "actually given absolute supremacy and prominence to Kannada in the churches of the Archdiocese of Bangalore" and thereby exposing that their motive was not Kannada but a deliberate ploy of fomenting disturbance aimed at driving Catholics away to other Protestant denominations.

Fraudulent Means of Fund Collection

Leaders of the two organisations, have in their memorandum, claimed that "we have authentic and credible information obtained from various sources regarding the so-called widespread fund collections carried out by these priests through several fraudulent means and organizations, which according to our information, runs into several crore of rupees to finance and sustain their sectarian and selfish agenda. It is reliably learnt that it is a conspiracy to intentionally create an unhealthy atmosphere in the Catholic Church, and also divert the attention away from the actual issue to save the culprits in the murder case."

They claimed that it is in public knowledge that the Carmel Seva Sangam-trust which is run by the President of the Catholic Karnataka Kannada Priests Balaga FrA Thomas, receives funds from foreign agencies called FODERVEREIN BEDEN, and ANNAPURNA FOUNDATION Germany and pointed out that the matter has already been taken up with the concerned authorities in this regard for a thorough investigation and necessary legal action.

"We also have documentary evidences of police complaints regarding the some of the shameful and unlawful activities, violent incidents and other illegal activities involving most of these priests in different police stations," the memorandum said.

They contended that there was a strong case that the two arrested priests as well as their main supporters, especially the ring leaders and the others, must be excommunicated from the Catholic Church, under the provisions of the Canon Law forthwith, as they are guilty of "wilfully violating and deliberately flouting their solemn religious vows of obedience and loyalty to the Ecclesial superiors" and also allegedly "violating the Sixth and Ninth Commandments that forbid killing or bearing false witness, which are consequently sufficient grounds for their automatic excommunication" and promised to furnish more documentary evidence and proof.

What a camouflaged vision given by our fellow brethen. While we have two priests taking the lead in saving the sad plight of diocese where our own priests have been tagged as criminals because of few ive peoples personal motive. God alone should give justice to this.. Teachings of our Lord is only in verbal talks and not in practice. Before pointing at two ive priests an introspection of the leaders own behavior will tell the truth.. It's indeed sad to see our democracy being misused to this great extent

Hats off to ICUF & FKCA office Bearers. These two groups really work for Christian Community particularly in Bangalore where these Kannada activist interfere in our Church activity. One Eg. Kannada Rakshana Vedike Narayan Gowda & Chidananda Murthy. It is rightly questioned to them why these guys not interested to have Pooja & mantras in Kannada at temples. Ka Ra Ve President himself don't know to pronounce Kannada Words.
Our Arch Bishop must check the activities of these 2 Kannada Priest (Chasara & Thomas) and if found guilty, must take appropriate action by transferring from these Parishes, where lot of people will listen their sermons.

Let us all support ICUF & FKCA for a good cause.

Congratulations to all the initiators of FKCA and ICUF.

"Bible" says many things about forgiveness because people then used to feel guilty and would repent for their bad deeds, but in the current scenarios that doesn't work. Such issues has to be put forward to people because unless people know and raise their voice against any issues, guilt and repentance can never be seen in any person.

It takes immense courage to raise your voice against anything wrong and the initiators of FKCA and ICUF have shown that courage and i heartily appreciate it.

Just for the record, why don't people encourage the voice raised against the issues with the Catholics, but discourage most of the times???

Once again congratulations to our Leaders who have faced a lot of hardship throughout their journey of people awareness. We are always there with you as a support in your future causes. Great Job!!!

There are vast differences between the Conversion and born again. We read in the Gospel of John 3 Ruler of the Jews named Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night. Ruler means He knows the scripture. Night means his life is full of darkness. What these Kannada so called priest is converted priest. Sorry to Say they have no born again experiences. The carnal desire, seed of Man still remains within. It is decorated from outside the inside carnal desire still remaining. Let me explain this when you convert agricultural land into non agricultural. Size of the land, location, address remains the same. Born again experience is Seeking provisions above. That is possible only when one should follow John 1:12 Whoever received Jesus He will empower us to become Children of God. John 1:13 which is powerful word it says These are born but without seed or carnal desire or will of man. They are born of God. Only those are born again they could do things which are Marvellous, they could touch the heart of people, for them no enmity only they spread the love. We read 2 Corinthians 5:17 One who is in the Christ is a New creation. That is born again principle. Mathew 12:36 we read On the Judgement day people will have to give an account of any unjustified words they have spoken. Your own words you innocent or guilty. We read Mark 3:28-29 Whoever slanders holy spirit will not be forgiven. We read James 126 If you are not able to control your tongues your religious is vain. Let us analyse: We use hand to feed mouth but at the same time we can also use our hand for shut the mouth to save our soul. Work towards the Kingdom of God non perishable things. God Bless you.

Dear Friends, I appreciate all the positive comments on the issue while for people with negative thoughts, i would just like to add that we are not here for publicity or forgiveness or to create complete nonsense. We will not gain anything from publicity as we are common people struggling for daily food and have family to look after (we are not entertainers). We have been forgiving these issues all these years which provoked the sinners to sin more but never reduced. Its high time and we should fight against it. And its not nonsense because the place where these sinners are hiding is the place where you grew learning the good deeds and Of course your kids in future may learn too. So please support and encourage the cause than staying at home and commenting on it.

Congratulation to FKCA and ICUF. We are and will support you in all your deeds and will pray to god for your success as well. Keep up the Great work and Never look back.

It is very interesting to note few observations by the readers,on this issue. It is rightly pointed out that any 'follower' of Christ deserves forgiveness and the person seems to be seeking it...If you come St Joseph's Church, Chamarajpet, you shall find 'red and yellow' flag where Fr.Chasara is a parish priest. With due respect to our state and the language,it is pertinent to note that the honorable High Court has opined against hoisting any flags other than our National Flag. So, it is contempt of religion as also law of the land. These people do not mind sermonizing against the Bishop during homily and burning the directives of our beloved Pope.It is clear and very important to find to whom their allegiance is...
For the record, they do not have qualms in addressing the Konkani speaking Christians as Goans or 'Britisharige Huttidavru".No body needs certificate from these people as we continue to present highest literature/media per area in the world, and in Kannada script.
Also, important to note the apathy of fellow Christians, at Bengaluru, who pretend not aware of the problem at the Church and its order...Haanv Maka ani Dev Somesthank....

So, If one require forgiveness let him turn to God. Let him repent, Let him born again experiences, not conversion experiences ( Transformation) but one should have Transfiguration experiences. Once you have born again you cannot go again. Forgiveness is those who Wait upon the Lord for his wisdom and do the will of the Father. Forgiveness is for those who deserve forgiveness. A total transformation and ready to face the consequences of the mistake.

Kannada priest? Who is their Lord? whether Jesus or Lord of this earth. Jesus rightly said Ruler of this earth is coming. Are they worshiping language or Jesus. Mathew 6:24 No one can serve two masters for he will either hate one and love the other,or he will be loyal to the first and look down on the second. If they are worshiping language, very well We need such people for the Kannada Sammelana' This is not the place. Better to send them for the research of Kannada scholars. When they are disciple of Jesus there is commandment of God John 8:31 You will be my true disciples If you keep my word, then you will know the truth & Truth will make you free. ' Jesus is interested in True Discipleship' Who wants to Know the Truth' If that calling is not there, one is unfit to call himself as priest, Entire Karnataka has to gather and show exit door for such people. John 14:17 Spirit of Truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him for he is with you and will be in you. He should be born again. He might have born with flesh and blood.. Not in Spirit. One who does not know Holy Spirit, They are not fit to be priest.

We read in the bible two characters 1. Saul and 2. David. Both have sinned, but beauty is that Saul turned to man of God for the forgiveness, Whereas David Turned to Almighty God for the forgiveness. We read the Psalm 51: He says take all the position, Take all the authority, take everything but do not depart your spirit from me' He is bitterly crying like a child. God forgiven him. We also read in the New Testament Peter and Judas. Peter denied Jesus 3 times and He turned to Lord Jesus. Judas betrayed Jesus he turned to High priest. Rest you know the result. To forgiveness one should be born again. It is not conversion but transfiguration. John 3: We read Nicodemus who knows the bible from first page to last page. Once you born again you cannot go back again. Here what is flesh and blood will dematerialize and New Materialize. You have a sickness, big lump in your body, or call it any sickness it has to be dematerialize. Power of God crushes the Satan and Power of Holy Spirit materializes in our life. We may go daily church but not born again inside. John 316 it is very popular everyone knows. Whoever believes in Jesus life everlasting. It is born again experience. Assume a Car was old but even if you put new tyre the Engine is old. Assume same brand but different formula, different engine, new design. Interior is different outside it looks same. So for Forgiveness, heart should get transformation and transfiguration of mind. Total change should take place. Hence Forgiveness is for those who desire. Jesus also said be soft as dove and sharp as snakes. Kindly don't use the word forgiveness so losely.

Forgive and Obedience is the two tools our catholic church is using. Forgiveness comes when the person committed sin and repented fully. One must read Mathew 18:23-35 The parable of unmerciful servant. This story throws light on the Kingdom of heaven. [ Note: the opening paragraph is very clear] A King decided to settle the accounts of his servants, the person who owed him 10000 dinnary. King took pity on him and only set him free But even cancelled his debt. But he did not show mercy on the fellow servant for 100 dinary he grabbed him by neck. this message came to King We all know what King did for him? Weren't you bound to have pitty on your companion. He handed over this servant to be punished, until he paid his whole debt. ' Kindly do not use losely the word forgive? Luke 6:36 Jesus said be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. We read John 11:33 Jesus was moved in the depth of his spirit and troubled. John 13:21 Jesus was distressed in Spirit. Luke 10:21 Jesus was filled with Joy of the Holy Spirit. Jesus had an order whatever he did he did in Spirit, Emotions supports and body act. That is the reason Pilot said here is a Man' What Man? complete man.. He always had an order. Look at the locomotive Engine, First comes Engine, then comes fuel tank at last comes Passenger bogie. Fact, Faith & Feeling. In our case emotion takes first place & immediately body acts. no scope for Spirit. We all disorderly people let us learn to put into order as Christ Jesus taught us.
