Mangaluru: A farmer and three cows die of electrocution

Mangaluru, Jun 23: Babu (61), retired employee of Puttur municipality and resident of Bhaktakody in Sarve village in Puttur taluk, got electrocuted accidentally on Monday June 22. He was clearing vines and canes which had grown in his garden, when a vine he was cutting down accidentally came in contact with power cables passing above.

Babu, who suffered electric shocks and sustained grave injuries, breathed his last while being taken to Puttur for treatment. Babu failed to see that a stray wire at the electric pole had been touching the electric cables. When the vine he was clearing came in contact with this stray wire, electricity got transmitted and he suffered shocks, it is gathered.

The farmer has left behind wife, two sons, and two daughters. A complaint about the incident was filed in Puttur rural poilce station.

In the meanwhile, two cows belonging to Laxminarayana Sharma from Nitte village in Karkala taluk died after coming into contact with live wire. These cows had been grazing in the field, when they came in contact with a severed power cable that had fallen down from the electric pole. The jersey cows were supporting the income sources of the family. Sharma has said that the cows were valued at Rs 1,50,000, and asked Mangalore Electricity Supply Company to reimburse this loss.
