Rain fury abates, wind takes up charge of devastation

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 23: Although the intensity of rain came down significantly on Monday June 22, strong wind gave rise to panic at several places of Karnataka coast. Perhaps because of strong winds, clouds got scattered, thus resulting in lesser rainfall.

Two cars parked near the court at B C Road were damaged due to a fallen tree. Charmadi Road had got blocked after landslip occurred at the eighth bend there. The road was cleared for traffic later. Similarly, fallen branch of a tree at Beluvai on national highway sent traffic in a tizzy. As 210 areca nut trees of Kaveri Devadiga at Shankarnarayana in Kundapur taluk got uprooted, a loss of about Rs 1.68 lac has been estimated. Traffic was also affected on Mani-mysuru road after a tree fell on the bridge near Ganapati shrine at Koyinadu in Kodagu, for over an hour.

House roofs of a large number of people were damaged due to wind and fallen trees. Several areca and banana plantations were razed to the ground. Electric poles fell to the ground at Mudoor, Jadkal, Sulkodu etc in Kundapur taluk. Rivers have swelled, but the main damage is being inflicted by strong wind.

The meteorological department has warned fishermen of coastal Karnataka to be careful, as it expects wind with a velocity of 45 to 55 km per hour to blow from western direction during the next 24 hours.
