Raichur, Jun 27: Parashuram Jangiri (37), assistant professor of agro forestry at the University of Agricultural Sciences here ended his life in the early hours on Friday June 26 allegedly by consuming some pesticide. He ended his life in the quarters allotted to him in the university campus.

In a suicide note left behind, Jangiri has blamed blackmail by his own subordinate staff and life threat posed in the name of naxals for his decision to commit suicide. He claimed that these two issues had put lot of mental pressure on him, which eventually forced him to decide to kill himself. He was serving this university since the last four years, and is survived by wife, Radhika, a four-year-old son, and a two-year-old daughter.

On Thursday night, he had slept in the hall of his house located in the residential complex within the main university compound inside the campus, along with wife, children, and a nephew. Somewhere in the wee hours on Friday, he got up, and consumed pesticide. His wife, who woke in the morning, went in search of him after observing that her husband was not in bed. He was seen struggling for life in a room and arrangements were made to transport him to Raichur Institute of Medical College and Hospital, but he breathed his last before reaching there.

Radhika alleged that two of her husband's subordinate staff were harassing him. 'Even after their blackmails and harassment were brought to the notice of higher ups, nothing was done to address the problem. My husband has not done anything wrong, nor had he inflicted injustice on anyone. Casteism has taken toll of my husband,' she rued.

The letter addressed to his father by Parashuram before his death, was handed over by the university administration to the police. A case was registered in the west police station in the city. Police circle inspector of the station, G Chandrashekhar, said that both the accused have been arrested and further steps are being undertaken.

Vice chancellor of the university, Dr P M Patil, said that it was an unfortunate incident. He said one of the staff members, Ravi Patil, has been removed from service, while the other, Attanur, has been suspended. He said that the suicide note has been given to the police to pave way for fair and free investigation. 'We will move in the case as per university rules and take steps accordingly,' he added.
