Mangaluru, Jun 27: Minister for forest, environment and ecology B Ramanath Rai on Saturday June 27 planted a sapling at MSEZ STP plant, Kavoor as part of Vanamahotsava, organized by the district administration in association with MSEZ.

Speaking on the occasion Ramanath Rai said, "The pollution control board has organized this programme. The programme needs to be conducted in a big way so that awareness is created among the people. Each of us has a responsiblity towards protecting the environment and taking care of it. In this direction we have to make the people aware of planting more and more plants in their neighbourhood."

Explaining about the MSEZ sewage treatment plant Srinivasulu, general manager of MSEZ Mangaluru said, "This plant was constructed jointly by Mangaluru STP Ltd and Mangaluru city corporation under ADB scheme. The plant has a capacity of 43 mld and is one of the biggest sewage plants in Karnataka. Previously sewage water was getting into the sea, but now through this plant sewage water is treated and then used for industrial purposes. Purification of water takes place in three stages. The purified water is used for industrial purposes. This plant reduces the depletion of natural resources by renewing the water for industrial need. This plant is built at a cost of Rs 17 crore."

Corporators Shashidar Hegde, Deepak Poojari, Keshav Maroli, directors of MSEZ, Srinivas Kamath, Nigam Vasani, vice president of MSEZ, V Suryanarayana, PRO of MSEZ, Ramachandra Bhandarkar and others were present.
