Kundapur: Devadiga Sangh starts memorial fund in Akshata's name

Kundapur, Jun 28: “We strongly condemn the rape and murder of Akshata, a college student from Byndoor, in Henberu area. We deem this to be an injustice inflicted on Devadiga community. We need to be always careful to ensure that such gruesome incidents do not recur in future”, said former president of Mumbai Devadiga Sangh, Dharmapal Devadiga.

He was speaking after visiting slain Akshata Devadiga's home at Henburu near Byndoor on Friday June 26.

He said that Devadiga community was committed to meet aspirations of Akshata and assured that their organization will entirely bear educational expenses of Akshata's sisters.

“We have set Akshata Devadiga Memorial Educational Fund rolling. This fund will have presidents of Mumbai, Karnataka, and Byndoor units of Devadiga organizations as office bearers, apart from seven members including B G Mohandas, Charan Byndoor, and Janardan Uppunda Mumbai. Zilla panchayat member, Gouri Devadiga, will be honorary adviser, while former union minister, Veerappa Moily, will serve as its convener. Moily has contributed one lac rupees as the initial contribution. We have also received contribution from different units. Initially the funds so pooled will be invested in fixed deposit in a nationalized bank. In the coming days, we will extend all possible support and cooperation to Akshata's family,” he explained.

Mumbai Devadiga Sangha president, Vasu S Devadiga, vice president, Ravi Devadiga, immediate past president, Hiriyadka Mohan Devadiga, Mangaluru Devadiga Sangha former president, Annaiah Sherigar, zilla panchayat education and health standing committee chairperson, Gouri Devadiga, B G Mohandas, Janardhana Devadiga, Byndoor Devadiga organization president, K G Subba Devadiga, and some others were present.

Vasu Devadiga said that his organization will be undertaking suitable measures in consultation with the regional units to tackle the problem of Devadiga girls being enticed away. He said that the organization members have received information that miscreants have been misleading girls from Devadiga community and luring them towards wrong things.
