Kasargod, Jul 2: The police department, which is concerned with the increasing number of goondaism, communal flare ups and crimes in the district, has been now been more and more relying on Kerala Anti Social Activities Prevention Act (KAPA) under which anti-social elements and criminals found to be repeatedly committing offences can be arrested without hearing or externed.

Under the section 15 of the said act, orders of externment have been passed against 35 persons already, and four more are being moved for this punishment, police sources said. They added that under section 3 of the said act, 11 persons have been arrested, and sent to jail for a period extending up to one year without hearing under these provisions.

On Wednesday July 1, Mangad Choyichchingal Ajmal Faras (22), who is facing ten criminal cases, was arrested by the Bekal police under KAPA. Faras faces several cases including murder attempt. As per the order issued by the district collector, police sub-inspector, P Narayanan, took him into custody.

KAPA enables the concerned to act sternly against people involved with multiple crimes. People with alleged involvement in three or more cases can be arrested under this act. Persons who have been externed from the district under this act cannot enter the district for a period of one year. This year, Vipin Raj from Nileshwar, Abdul Sattar from Kasargod, and Sunil Kumar from Kumble have been externed. The policemen are pooling together information for arresting more people under the said act with the hope of improving crime scene in the district.
