Udupi, Jul 7: An Assamese youth was killed at Shirur Muddumane near Mandarti in the taluk in the early hours of Monday July 6 after a dispute which arose between two gangs of people hailing from Assam resulted in an animated fight. The youth who got killed in the incident was Mahendraraj Bonsi (22).

Several youngsters hailing from Assam are engaged in doing coolie work on daily wage basis at Mandarti and Shirur Muddumane near Brahmavar in the taluk. On Sunday, the group which works at Mandarti village had an argument over the job opportunity with those working in Shirur Muddumane over phone.

Enraged at the words exchanged during these conversations, Mahendraraj Bonsi, Mridul Saronia, Phoolan Berman and Milan Berman went to Shirur Muddumane ostensibly to personally settle the issue. After the two groups fought with each other, Nayana Das, Sukleshwar Saronia, and Jayant Das reportedly attacked Mahendraraj Bonsi with a sickle. In addition to hitting his back with the sickle, they hit his temple with the handle of the sickle. Bonsi, who suffered deep wounds, was in critical condition when he was taken to a private hospital in nearby Brahmavar town. He passed away at around 2 am on Monday.

A complaint about the incident stands filed in Brahmavar police station. Investigation has been taken up.
