Madikeri, Jul 9: A woman working in a coffee plantation at Guhya near Siddapur in Kodagu district died on Wednesday July 8 morning after a wild elephant ran amuck and attacked her. Another person who was with the first one survived with grievous injuries. She has been admitted in a hospital at Mysuru.

Kamalamma (54), a worker at the plantation, died in this incident, while Vasanti (33) was injured. When both Kamalamma and Vasanti were working in the plantation on Wednesday morning, the pachyderm made a sudden appearance and attacked them. Both were seriously injured in the incident. Both were taken to a hospital in Siddapur, but Kamalamma did not survive this journey. Vasanti was provided first aid at this hospital before being taken to Mysore for advanced treatment.

As the spot where this incident took place is near Siddapur junior college, the students have become panicky.

The villagers were preparing to hold protest against the negligence of the forest department, alleging that none of the forest officials had been to the hospital, even after two women were attacked by wild elephant. A large number of villagers and workers gathered in front of the hospital at Siddapur and expressed resentment at the attitude of forest officials. They also expressed anger at the failure of the department to contain elephant attacks, which have been going up with passage of time.

The police officials succeeded in pacifying the angry villagers. The forest officials, who reached the hospital later, promised to provide compensation to the families of the deceased and injured workers.
