Mangaluru, Jul 10: With heavy rains lashing the city, several areas have experienced landslips putting many families at risk. Add to that, construction of buildings on high-level and hilly areas has further aggravated the risk.

In one such case, a retaining wall has collapsed at 'Vailankanni Abode', an apartment complex by Vishal Enterprises at Gurunagar in Maryhill here due to heavy downpour.

Though no injuries were reported, the residents in the building are at a high risk with heavy rains expected in the coming days. It is learnt that landslip took place early morning on Friday July 10 due to heavy rainfall.

A resident who did not want to be identified said, "Due to heavy rains the retaining wall has collapsed. The building is in a dangerous position. We have already informed the authority concerned about the present condition of the building, and they have agreed to set it right. Still, we feel the residents are at a risk."

It is also learnt that there are approximately 18 families dwelling in the apartment building. Now this landslip behind the apartment has put them in a fix. Even the children's play area is on the verge of collapsing.

Speaking to daijiworld, manager of Vishal Enterprises, said that the collapse of the retaining wall will not affect anyone. "There is no connection between the retaining wall and the building. It is the retaining wall of the property that has collapsed, and it will not affect the building. Already 40 people are working at the site to clear the debris using machineries. Everything will be set right soon and no one will be affected," he assured.

He also said that water flows into the property through other compounds which led to the collapse of the retaining wall.
