2 farmers end lives, one makes attempt


Bengaluru, Jul 13 (DHNS): Two farmers committed suicide while one more made an attempt on his life in the State on Sunday.

Mallayya (55) hung himself at Kaluvehalli in Challakere taluk of Chitradurga district. According to sources in the family, he had borrowed Rs 55,000 from a bank and Rs 3.5 lakh from private persons. He owned four acre of land. Parashurampura police have registered a case.

In another case, Ravi Shankrappa Jambura (29) ended his life by hanging from the ceiling in his house at Aarikatti village in Hirekeruru taluk of Haveri district. While he did not own any agricultural land, his father owns two acres of land and had loans totalling to Rs 2.10 lakh. Jambura was worried over the debt burden, according to his father, police said.

A debt-ridden farmer tried to end his life by consuming pesticide at Neralagi Cross in Shiggoan taluk of Haveri district on Sunday. He was rushed to KIMS immediately and is battling for life.

Basavaraj Chambanna Viveki, a resident of Mattigatti village in Kundgol taluk had borrowed Rs three lakh from a rural bank to purchase a mini tractor. He repaid Rs two lakh and the bank had issued him three notices to repay the balance. He had grown chilli but failed to get good yield. He had also borrowed additional Rs three lakh from private money lenders. A case has been registered at the Tadas police station.
