Mangaluru: Old man sets himself afire at Jeppu Bappal

Mangaluru, Jul 13: Shivasubrahmani (67), a retired railway employee, set himself afire near his house at Jeppu Bappal here on the night of Saturday July 11. He succumbed to his burn injuries later.

A case about this suicide was registered in Pandeshwar police station.

It is said that Shivasubrahmani had consumed some poisonous material on Saturday evening. At night, he soaked himself with petrol and ignited fire. His son, Shivaraman, with the help of some neighbours, succeeded in extinguishing the flames and shifting him to Wenlock government hospital. The old man, who had suffered 90 percent burns, succumbed to his injuries there in the wee hours on Sunday, it is gathered.

Before dying, Shivasubramani told the doctors that he was frustrated with his life after the death of his wife a few years back. The man's funeral was later conducted at Nandigudda graveyard during the day on Sunday.

The police have begun investigation.
