Puttur, Jul 14: Rukmayya Gowda (62), a resident of Bedrody within Bajattoor village near Uppinangady and a farmer by profession, has committed suicide. Gowda, who had consumed poison and had been admitted into hospital in serious condition, breathed his last on Monday July 13 evening. Reportedly, inability to clear mounting debt weighed heavily in his mind and forced him to take the decision to kill himself.

It is learnt that Rukmayya Gowda had borrowed heavily from the local cooperative bank and some locals. He had suffered from chikungunya two years back, after which his health was on the downhill. Hence, he was unable to work as hard as before.

As the pressure of those who demanded repayment of loan increased on him, Rukmayya was overburdened by a sense of frustration, it is said. On Sunday evening, he had consumed poison at home. He was admitted into the government hospital at Puttur, and then taken to Mangaluru.

Rukmayya is survived by wife, a son, and a daughter. A case of unnatural death stands registered about this incident in Uppinangady police station.
