Bengaluru: Farmer suicides continue in state: 73 dead in 23 days

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Jul 16: No matter what the politicians say about stopping the suicides of farmers in the state, they have completely failed in doing so.

With as many as 9 persons taking the extreme step on Wednesday, the total farmers death toll in the past 23 days has reached 73. The figure is alarming and worrying.

Why is it happening?

There is no clear answer to this question yet. Various reasons have been cited by people depending on their political affiliations without looking into the problem impartially. The centre blames state and the state blames the centre. BJP accuses the Congress and vice versa. JD(S) also says many things. But the deaths continue.

V S Ugrappa from Congress even went to the extent of saying on in the legislative council that there were instances where farmers committed suicide for the sake of compensation.

"There has been a dramatic rise in the number of suicides during the time of the legislature session. However, nobody is trying to establish the veracity of these deaths, and all of them are being termed as suicides," Ugrappa had said.

Quoting experts, he had said that a majority of suicides (13.79%) pertained to liquor-related problems and other behavioural factors. While 11.8 pc of suicides were due to chronic illnesses, 12.32 pc suicides were due to economic factors/indebtedness. (As on Tuesday July 14).

The house is burning. Extinguish the fire first, then look for reasons. Farmer deaths in the state need to be stopped. Now.

Our farmers are committing suicide because they cannot afford to repay their creditors.

It is high time we legislate laws that would enable Trustees in Bankruptcy to write off, reduce, and/or reschedule the debt of those Farmers and all persons in business who face genuine losses. Before they take thee extreme step of ending their lives, just to escape from creditors.

Several accounts appear in the media regarding suicidal deaths by farmers.

From a report appearing in today's newspaper it appears that many of these deaths are caused because of the inability of the farmers to repay their loans advanced by unscrupulous money-lenders who possibly demand high rate of interest. There should be a law preventing these sharks from charging exorbitant interest.

It is also reported that in Mysore District an attempt at suicide was avoided because of the intervention of the D.C.

It is good to observe that no such deaths have been reported in Dakshina Kannada District.

Congrats to our D.C. Mr. Ibrahim and the S.P. Dr. Shranappa who are taking keen interest to look after the welfare of the farmers.

Honerable Siddharamaiah has given a compensation of Rs. 2 lakhs each from Karnataka state.

The central government is not at all bothered to release any funds to the states for the farmers.

Instead the chaaiwaala gave farmers land on cheap rates to corporates.

In the chaaiwaala regiem only corporates Adani, Ambani, and tatas are better.

    RSS is getting Vyapam corruption.

Chaaiwaala without Lokayukta gave money to RSS.

    NOBODY TO CARE FOR FARMERS.
RAHUL GANDHI AT LEAST CONSOLES AND WIPES OUT THE TEARS AND THE CHAAIWAALA AND BJP PUT FEARS IN FARMERS.

Very very sad state of affairs. It is as bad as there is no government machinery to take care of the farmers. Siddaramayya govt is busy in distributing the resources under many " BHAGYAS" to extend his partisan and appeasement vote bank politics. He has money to give huge compensation to cattle smugglers but no time to bother about the people who toil their lives to feed us.The present govt will pay the price for it's sins. The drama of rahul will not fetch any solution as he has no idea about good governance. Loosing 73 farmer's life is a big alarm bell to the rulers.

There is elected Govt. in Karnataka. The local govt seems to be least bothered about the farmers. Karnataka is not under Governor’s /Central rule for the Prime Minister to be answerable.

All this happening due to a corrupt media, system which is busy behind useless stuff rather than concentrating on burning issues like this one. I think there is no opposition parties in Karnataka to raise this issue or they might have been bribed to keep quiet.

why do you blame the centre for whats happening in the state? Just because readers of this forum are encouraging your comments? This has happened in Karnataka and you have not spoken a word about the state administration. Why cant the CM who we elected do something about this. Lakhs of rupees was waived off for Ambareesh treatment. Why doesnt the Govt waive the same for the poor farmers.

Let this State Government convey that we are not able to handle situation and then the duty of the Central Government comes in to picture. Please do not Just like that blame Central Govt. I have seen lot of observations in this line - Feku VS Papu ( enjoying themselves ?). For GOD sake please do not bring these things in to this matter where he to seriously think - lives of the poor farmers and support to their family.

We have more than 250 MLA's and around 50 MLC's .Rather than taking and fighting during sessions if each one adopts one farmer and pays his loan, then the problem will be solved. The amount for which these farmers are dying is not more than 3lac. Our leaders can easily afford this. If they start pitching in then surely public will start funding. Most of the elected members only speak ill about each other so that they can win next election and development is on back burner

It is a matter of great regret that the suicides by farmers are on the increase.

Can The Government form a body to study the situation and suggest appropriate measures to alleviate the problem?.... most importantly the need to execute the recommendations made by the independent body.

The initial reaction of people is that the farmers commit suicides because they are unable to repay the bank loans. Serious consideration should be given to help the farmers by trying convince the banks they these poor people should be provided with interest free loans. With regard to the prevailing loans the Government should come to the rescue by taking over the debts.
