Kasargod, Jul 18: In a tragic incident, a policeman got washed away after the bike he was riding fell into a stream at Pallathur here on Saturday July 18.

The cop, Narayana Naik (52) was serving as assistant sub-inspector (ASI) at Kumble police station. He was a resident of Adoor Noojibettu.

It is learnt that Naik was riding home after dropping a relative at some place. While riding over a sunken bridge, Naik's bike skidded and fell into the water and he got washed away.

Fire service personnel and locals rushed to the spot and searched for Naik, but his body is yet to be found. The search operation was hindered by heavy rains.

Naik is the second ASI of Kumble police station to have lost his life in two days in a row. On Friday July 17, M Surendran (53) passed away due to cardiac arrest during duty. A native of Alekkad Kamkala near Payyannur, Surendran had visited Permude on Friday afternoon to make inquiries relating to a police complaint. During this time, he suffered from acute chest pain all of a sudden, and collapsed to the ground. He was immediately taken to a private hospital in the town, but treatments given there could not revive him. Surendran had joined police department in 1984. He was in the special squad of superintendent of police team for eight years before being promoted as ASI and transferred to Kumble station.
