Holiday declared for schools and colleges
Udupi/Kundapur, Jul 19: The incessant rain from the last few days has hit normal life in and around district. After a short break from rain on Sunday, July 19, it is back to pouring cats and dogs, leaving many houses damaged, trees uprooted and roads flooded across Udupi district.
The rain has also exposed the laxity of municipality and almost all the roads are filled with rainwater causing horrendous time for commuters.
Paddy saplings have been planted and some farmers fear that the excessive rain may wash out their harvest this season. In some areas such as Kodankoor, Kutpady, Balaipade, Malpe, and Padukere, it is reported that agricultural land has been turned into ponds with excessive water.
A house belonging to Lachcha of Kutpady was partially damaged when a tree fell on it and property worth Rs 50,000 was reportedly damaged. Shashikant’s home was also damaged partially in the same incident at Kutpady.
The Uppoor, Udyavar and Heroor rivers have been overflowing above the danger mark. People fear that if the rain continues at the same rate, the whole region will be flooded.
A tree uprooted near Brahmavar and leaned on to a high tension wire and chicken stall. Roofs in many of the houses have been damaged in the rain. The wetland dam of Mundady village is Kokkarne is now overflowing due to continuous rain.
Roads are waterlogged in Halady, Avarse, Shiroor, Goliyangadi and Mandarti. Traffic was affected on Goliyangadi to Mandarti route.
Many houses and shops in Kundapur, Shiroor and Avarse have been waterlogged.

Inox theatre cancels movie screenings after road caves in
Meanwhile, a portion of the road in the premises of Inox theatre in Manipal here caved in, forcing the theatre to cancel all movie screenings for the evening. Those who had already booked tickets were given refunds.
The theatre as well as its approach road and parking have been constructed on a hillock, and the premises now stand in a precarious state.
If rains continue to batter the area, there is a likelihood of more severe damage to the theatre premises or even a landslip. For now, barricades have been put up to prevent people from venturing inside the area.
