'Kannur airport to become functional from mid-2016'

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 20 (IANS): Kerala's upcoming fourth international airport at Kannur will begin commercial operations by the middle of 2016, a state minister said on Monday.

"Almost 60 percent of the runway work is complete. Also, 38 per cent work on the terminal building is finished. The first aircraft will land there on December 31. The airport will commence commercial operations by the middle of 2016," Ports and Excise Minister K. Babu told reporters.

Once the airport opens in north Kerala, it will become the only state in the country with four international airports.

Babu said other works at the Rs.1,890 crore international airport were also progressing fast and tenders floated for the purchase of different equipment.

Funds for the project would come through debt and equity, with the Kerala government holding 35 percent stake.

The remaining funds would come from the Airport Authority of India, oil major Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and private participation.

Kannur air port is good for smuggling for kasaragod and kannur people as most of the people business is smuggling. And kerala government is also sporting the smugglers as top to bottom government officials main aim is to make money. paise ke liye kuch be kerega.

Traffic at Mangalore airport will not suffer. This is the admission of many of my Kasargod colleagues. Kannur airport is located in interior place which is far comparing to the distance from Mangalore to Kasargod by road. They still prefer Mangalore airport.

To compare with kannur..For that flight has to come to mangalore right.unless there are direct flights to mangalore.. mangalore airport does not qualify for such comparison and I don't think so keralites or mangaloreans will prefer next closest airport bangalore for us or cochin for keralites over kannur airport. ..

A day will come, not very far, for Mangaloreans to frequent Kannur Airport for taking direct flights to and from Europe and America.

Hurling abuses on Keralites/Kasaragodians will have to be swallowed back.

I was not surprised the way congress lost last lokha sabha election,we had leaders like Veerappa moily & Oscar Fernandis at helm of affair for ten years. They could have changed entire outlook of our district as we all know one decade to be in power is very long. These politicians did nothing, now iam sure they would regret as well as have all the time but no work. They are so free they are willing to be there for all the inauguration Function now.

The people who are Sitting in USA or Mangalore do not know the potential of North Karnataka. Some of the Mangaloreans have seen North Karnataka only in Maps thats all. There are just two flights to Hubli per day from Bengaluru and Mumbai, which go always full. The Cargo potential in Hubli is too high where as the Bajpe Cargo Terminal is always deserted. But the lethargy of Karnataka Govt and the politicians has failed to tap the potential of North Karnataka.

Our Mangalore-Bajpe-Kenjar Airport is a Table-Top Airport, which means it is situated on a Hill top with steep valley at the borders of the Airport, and hence there is no sufficient place to expand this Kenjar-Bajpe Airport. When T A Pai was influential in Central Govt he had planned to shift this Airport to Padubidri so that sufficient plain land is available for big expansions in future. But this plan of T A Pai was scuttled by some vested interests. The cost of expansion of runway in Bajpe is three times that of expansion in any plain-land runway expansion.
May-2010 accident of the flight which killed 154 people in Kenjar airport by over-shooting the runway and falling in the valley, could have been averted if this airport was on some plain land.

Even though our Belagavi & Hubballi are bigger cities than Kannur, still they do not have full fledged Airport. Belagavi Civilian Airport is also in the grip of Air Force and they are not allowing expansion of Belgaum Airport citing Security problem to Air Force.
Not only there is sufficient air passenger traffic in these north Karnataka cities, but also due to fast expanding irrigation in Bijapur (Vijayapur), Bagalakot & Belgaum districts large quantity of fresh Agri-product Cargo is available for shipment to Gulf countries in these north karnataka Airports, but no one is trying to tap this potential. Hence all agri.products from north Karnataka are shipped to foreign countries through Goa or Maharashtra Airports.

This might damage the business of Mangalore Airport where a percentage of business comes from the passengers travelling from Kasargod and Kannur to other destinations including Bangalore and Mumbai.... Why the central government is wasting money by building airports within a very close distance... It was not required at this stage since Government could have invested the same money in other sectors

Mangalore air port will not only lose traffic, and the Kannur people will get much cheaper flights, since their CM, ministers and lobby are active at the Central level.

Mr. David, Karnataka Ministers or Polititians don't know the meaning of shame. They are more interested in Press conference than development. And of course just for the sake of getting votes, this people giving all Bhagya facilities instead of creating job opportunities by developing the state.

All party Politicians are same , just pointing fingers to each others. Some fools supporting them
