Mangalore, May 31: Director of corporate partnerships at Population Services International (PSI) in Bangalore Joseph Mathai at the health workshop for the members of the trade organized by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) said that it is a long time since there was a public-private partnership to mitigate HIV/AIDS.

The workshop was held in the chamber hall at Bunder her on Wednesday May 30.

He further said that NGOs along with media have already come together with the government in this regard and now it is left to the economic or business sector to contribute their mite to this much-needed cause.

The launch of Project Connect in the district to create awareness about HIV/ AIDS among the labours especially those from non-organized sector too was held. 

He further elaborated that among most of the HIV infected from India, majority are from the working and poor class.  “Let me put it exactly and without any hesitation that industry and major establishments have a major role to play now.  Karnataka has a high percentage of HIV infected in the country.  So it is up to each one of us to contribute our best to overcome this menace,” he added

Speaking on the occasion, associate professor of general medicine at Mangalore KMC Dr John T Ramapuram said that 90 percent of Indian doctors do not know how to supervise HIV/AIDS. “If this is the trend what can we expect from uneducated or people who do not have access for higher studies,” he questioned.

District surgeon and superintendent of Wenlock Hospital Dr J Prabhudev spoke on the present status of Wenlock hospital.

Former superintendent Dr L L Joshua, KCCI president John Prasad Menezes, vice-president Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, honorary secretary M Shekhar Poojari and Ahmed Bava were present during the occasion.
