New Delhi, Aug 5 (IANS): The government has started the process of bringing out a dictionary of Hindi etymology with about one lakh entries, parliament was informed on Wednesday.

Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, said the Central Hindi Directorate started the work from 2014-15 on a project named "Hindi Vyutpatti Kosh".

"Total number of entries selected are approximately 1 lakh and about 6,000 of them have been completed. For Hindi etymology, the work so far available in the field is not much. With this background, the directorate has initiated the project," she said.

Irani said common scientific terms and new electronic terms, which are popular in Hindi like social media, pen drive, e-mail, hospital, printer and mouse were included.

"Words and their synonyms from Hindi dialects such as Rajasthani, Awadhi, Bundeli, Bhojpuri like 'harkara', 'mor', 'tor', 'khaanti', 'chauras' and other Indian languages have also been included," she added.
