Mangalore, Jun 13: The problem of sea erosion may soon be brought under control by planting mangroves along the shore, said deputy conservator of forest department Vijaykumar.  Mangroves will not only check sea erosion but also facilitate breeding of fish.  This project will be initiated under Mangrove Conservation Scheme.

He was speaking at a programme organized by the local unit of state forest department and Grama Aranya Samiti to provide facilities to the members of the Samiti. The programme was held at the DK Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School, Sasihithlu here on Tuesday June 12.

Speaking on the occasion Mulki-Moodbidri MLA Abhaychandra Jain said that like in the past boulders will be placed along the shore to check sea erosion. Elaborating on the measures to be taken to check sea erosion, Jain said the relief packages to those affected by the erosion will be provided by the central government.

The issue has already been discussed with deputy commissioner Maheshwar Rao and district in-charge minister Nagaraj Shetty, he said.

Fishing nets worth Rs 20,000 were distributed to each of the five groups of fishermen while eight self-help groups were give coupons worth Rs 20,000. As many as 1,300 members of the Grama Aranya Samiti were presented with pressure cookers on the occasion.

Among those present were office-bearers of the forest department, members of the Grama Aranya Samiti and others.
