India wants UAE as top partner in trade, counter-terrorism: PM

Abu Dhabi, Aug 16 (PTI): Ahead of his talks with the Emirati leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the Gulf region is vital for India's economic, energy and security interests and he wants to see the UAE as the foremost partner in trade and countering terrorism.

Noting that both India and UAE have a range of common security and strategic concerns in the region, including terrorism and extremism, the Prime Minister said he is keen to foster a strategic partnership, particularly in the security, energy and investment sectors, with the fastest growing Arab economy and its visionary and pragmatic leadership.

Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to visit UAE in 34 years, will have talks with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice president and Prime Minister of UAE, a day after his arrival here.

"We have a range of common security and strategic concerns in the region, including terrorism and extremism. So India and the UAE have everything to be a top priority for each other. This is the way I look at the UAE. The Gulf region is vital for India's economic, energy and security interests," Modi said in an interview to Khaleej Times newspaper.

Noting that he has begun his regional engagement with the UAE which reflects the importance that he attaches to the country, Modi said he would like to see a truly comprehensive strategic partnership evolve between the two countries.

"I want to see the UAE as our foremost trade and investment partner. We would build regular and effective cooperation in a full range of security challenges. Our armed forces would engage with each other more. We will work together more closely in international forums and in addressing regional challenges. There are no limits to our relationship," Modi said.

Asserting that terrorism poses a grave danger to humanity, he said all those countries who believe in humanity, must stand together without delay as it was extremely necessary to challenge the forces of terrorism.

"As far as the Indian community is concerned, the languages that are spoken in India, are all spoken in the UAE! In a manner of speaking, the UAE is a 'Mini India'. The way the two communities work together represents a special bond," the Prime Minister said.

He said the Indian community was not only contributing to the progress and development of the host country, but also participating in the economic development of India through their remittances.

Mr. Modi wanted to visit Israel, but the chance went finally to the President because the President was tied up in India for long without having any Presidential vacation as usual.

Just before the Israeli visit of the President, the PM wanted to visit UAE in a hurry for two days due to some diplomatic reasons.

Mosque and labor camp visit where over 1 million blue collar laborers of the Indian origin, mainly from the Southern States are located. How many Presidents and PMs of other countries have visited the slums of Delhi so far?

These Mosque and labor camp visits are purely for his and his party's political mileage.

So far, he has not yet visited the slum people of New Delhi, about 10 million are in the list. Whenever he is riding in his royal convoy of cars to board the Air India 747 chartered plane, if he has looked sidewise, he might have seen the outside of some slums. Is he ever going to enter inside a slum in New Delhi as a very compassionate humble Prime Minister of India strictly following the Gandhian method of compassion and love, which he preaches while visiting foreign countries?

Is he going to visit the Mosques and Churches in Indian upon his return? Is he going to visit the slums of India upon his return? Let us wait and see the drama to continue!

Mr Mathew, symbolic visits to slums, farmers house etc does not make any difference to the lives of slum dwellers or farmers. what is important is the programmers you have for them. recently when farmers death in Karnataka was being discussed in TV, Mr Deve Gowda was seen weeping. He told that, because of his ill health he could do nothing, otherwise he would sit near a Gandhi statue and protest. He did not say anything on how to improve the lot of the farmers. Mr Modis Foreign visits are not for sight seeing. for a country like India which is deficient in energy forging partnership with oil rich countries is of strategic importance. Mr Modi while stressing the importance of Land reforms said that, due to the small Land holding of Indian farmers it would be wise to give some alternate to farmers instead of the entire family depending only on Agriculture. hence he proposed small industries be developed in rural India. However, an agenda driven opposition, which was interested in power gave such a spin to it to scuttle the passage of the Bill.

The foundation laid by the Prime Minister LATE Indira GANDHI who visited UAE for the first time 34 years back is so strong that even to this day the relationship is well maintained .In these 34 years the major term is ruled by her party members.Indians Educated as well as laborers have gone to UAE to earn their living. In return through their remittances India has developed economically. Hence the visit of the present PM neither gives boost to the country in any way nor the country would have lost any thing if he had not visited. It is only a personal gain.
