Mangaluru, Sep 4: Scores of college students under the banner of All College Students' Association on Friday September 4 organized 'Rasta Roko' for several minutes in front of University College, Hampankatta here, demanding halt on the ongoing work on the Yettinahole project.

Addressing the protest state legal advisor of All College Students' Association Dinakar Shetty said, "The government should immediately drop this project. All organizations, institutions, communities irrespective of caste, creed, gender should join the protest against the ongoing project which is a threat to the people of Dakshina Kannada."

He also alleged that there were irregularities in the project and hence the government should confiscate the assets of the officers involved in it. "In future, severe water scarcity will hit the city, and people may struggle to meet their water needs," he added.

He also slammed union law minister D V Sadananda Gowda and former minister Veerappa Moily for their stand on the project and urged them to stand by the people of Dakshina Kannada.

Speaking to daijiworld, Dinakar Shetty said, "The association will hold an internal meeting on September 7 and decide on holding all-college bandh on September 15."

On this occasion association president Rohini, executive president Donald Norohana and others were present.

Pandeshwar police who were at the spot dispersed the protestors and traffic resumed.

We need a person like Hardik Patel among students to make this issue more revolutionary othe wise our elected representatives will sell our land and settle some where else. When you hurt nature it will react with earthquake, famine all follows. God made this world in his wisdom. When man change it with human wisdom surely Gods anger follows.

Our Land, Our Nature, Our water need to be protected - there is not 2nd argument in that. Unfortunately, our leaders who got elected from Tulunadu, want to be come Karnataka State leaders and All India Leaders. We trust on them but they are proving time time time that they are not trustworthy. Whatever may be the project, let the people of DK and Udupi decide. Let there will be a committee of non-political leaders and experts to decide these kind of projects. The projects came to DK and Udupi during last 30 years have proved that Tulunadu citizens did not get the major share of benefits. Gone are those days, time has come. Now our people will decide our future. The best solution for this is creation of Tulunadu. I am sure the people of DK and Udupi including Kasargod are strong enough to create the Tulunadu.

    My Dear Students,

Do you even know what it means to protest?? There is no point... All sorts of Students wing should be banned by Government of India, or very soon students could radicalize the Institutions and create a Political Atmosphere. Vigilante PFI and ABVP groups are a menace these days..

It is really really distressing to see only a handful of agitators protesting against DVS while the students are watching the hapless handful from
    a safe distance.
    Will this movement ever turn
    into a mass movement like
    kalasa banduri? To keep the
    momentum and succeed, the
    student community,working
    class,business people all
    should join hands.The student
    unions,the temples.churches and mosques,labour unions,merchant
    bodies like chamber of commerce
    must actively mobilize their
followers for a sustained campaign. The press also should
do its bit by publishing any news
concerning Yettinahole as front page news.

You are right Mr. Bhat. Unless there is a sustained campaign, it will be an encouragement to the concerned authorities to go ahead as planned. Only when the campaign is very strong the authorities will reconsider. A handful of students protesting is common and will not have any impact.

War in Syria actually began as protests as several villages and cities were facing drought, the President Bashar didn't care about the drought and people's protest, going by this protest it seems like thing are going to get worse if peoples demands are not met, there is already a call by several organisations for a separate state "tulunadu"

Let's accept the reality that we are in today. Let's not pretend to be ignorant about it. Let's accept that after industrial revolution and idea of wealth creation have led to accelerated exploitation of mother nature whose damage can't be reversed. Notion of states n countries itself have led to greed n competition that manifested in various types of wars. We all are aware of madness called Development Which definitely demands more resources and only source that provides it is mother nature. Question to be asked is to what extent we desire development and where should we stop ( max limit)?

Let's accept that one day planet earth itself will end, so too energy source sun. We can only hope to slow down man-made damages to nature.

Access to clean water and clean air is every living creatures fundamental right. Unfortunately we inherit lot of evil, new generation has to start from all challenges that are left to it by predecessor.

To address existential crises, people are trying to come out with ideas like interconnecting rivers, interconnecting people n cultures etc. So far people from coastal belt were well protected by nature. We didn't face much challenges bcz mother nature was kind to us. But even if we are not indulged in damaging nature, activities carried out elsewhere would definitely propagate. We are not isolated, we are not insulated. Nothing is guaranteed. We know how civilizations have wiped out bcz of nature's fury. We know how certain deserts were once a place of oceans.

There should be an end to madness. Awakening late is fine but definitely yettinahole stirred consciousness of coastal belt people and jolted their inertia mood. that's great.

Coastal belt people have only fish n coconut n beetlenut. Rest of the day-to-day items need to be transported from other parts of karnataka n neighboring states. Tomato, batata, onion, all vegetables, pulses, mango, fruits etc. come to mangalore market from bangalore. And bangalore gets supply from districts like kolar, chikballapur, doddaballapur, tumkur and north karnataka. Whatever little vegetables grown here goes for exorbitant prices, supply will never meet huge demand. For daily living we are totally dependent on farmers from those regions.

Unfortunately those regions are - arid regions, plagued by drinking water problems, drought, loss of crop etc. Time has come to give justice to every kannadiga bcz all have equal rights on planet earth n on natural resources. Right to living has been snatched away by few individuals. It's high time for state government to conduct a thorough study afresh and bring this matter to closure. Solutions could involve harnessing water from sea and improving rain harvest. Rain fall this year has been dismal. Whatever rains we get we have to preserve n share with brethren in need. Life could soon face extinction considering horrific climatic changes.

Since western ghats quite close to sea shore, most of rain-clouds are blocked by high ghat section and clouds precipitate along western ghat region. If rain clouds could travel all the way to kolar or if western ghat like topography existed near kolar then that region wud have got sufficient rain. Tragedy is that monsoon clouds do not drive deep into interiors of karnataka and therefore people need to be a little compassionate towards brethren from arid regions.

come up with admissible solutions in situations like these where water itself is a scarcity for majority of people. Expert study will definitely mention maximum permissible damage to parameters of concern. Whatever is excess could be shared with rest in need. If coastal belt faces acute drinking water problem then arabian sea is just next door. Excess water anyway goes into it. Set up desalination plant for coastal belt water requirements. Sea levels are rising, tulunaadu could be a subject of history for pupil from kolar. When our land gets submerged, we may need help from kolar during mandatory migration.

    Dear Gabriel,
what man has found is only the way of destruction to nature, you need not worry about migration ,if the Sea level rises no land will get escaped ,for your information the Sea covers 78% of worlds area & even when Tsunami hitted We mangalorians never faced any problem why because the balance in nature,Geographically all is perfect, the land mangalore is formed from the sette of fertile soil thru floods ,Covered by western ghats & Arabian sea.Where the excess water goes tell the same to the people to whom your concern is to have rain harvesting,Cleaning of large lakes which still in pathetic conditions,Let them take water from Linganamaki Dam,Mandya Falls were the Excess water gets wasted every year and hope you will get better answer from them.Just take a trip to western ghats or near to Uppinagady or to Nearby Netravathi bridge soon after rainy season that's on October or November you can get the actual mean of excess water. In your comment" lands that face submerging under sea have been protected to some extent by innovative means"than visit Ullal see how Crores of Rupees Submerged & what land had saved

Compassionate we are. But when there is no water what will you divert? During rainy season, even Chikballapur does not want water.
In the end, this project will make sure that there will be no water for us and no water for them also.
Even if you dig a borewell in Mangalore, you won't get water because river is also a main source for groundwater recharging.

Do not loose hope. Man has found ways to live in extreme conditions may it be extreme cold ice or extreme warm or extreme desert like place. lands that face submerging under sea have been protected to some extent by innovative means. Ultimately upside has to come down and down side has to rise till level surface achieved.

people from arid region drink water containing chemicals like fluoride, arsenic which are poisonous.

    Fri, Sep 04 2015

Gabriel, I agree with you that man has to come up with innovative solutions in dire situations. Unfortunately "diverting rivers" has been done and already has an extremely high rate of failure.

However, in this case, I don't think even innovation is needed. Growing more trees, protecting forests and good amount of rain water storage and harvesting at home level will solve the issue for many. There are people who even do agriculture on stored rainwater, here in Karnataka.

We know deep down that too many atrocities on nature are the cause of our problems. I read recently that sand-mining can cause serious ground water recharge issues, because sand retains lot of water.

If we go ahead and destroy western ghats, where should the wild animals go? Already areca nut and banana plantations are being attacked by monkeys and elephants, this will only increase later. We are just being punished by nature for our greed. Who likes a leopard wandering near a residential area?

So the right solution is to go back to nature. Treat nature as our mother and treat her well and get her back in shape. The new age technology solutions like de-salination should be our last resort, when no other natural method works. If you can't grow new forests, at least don't destroy the existing ones.

    Ajith Poonja,
You have made a valid observation that whatever the coastal region is today, it is due to enterprise and effort of people of this region itself. The process short selling people of Tulunadu started from 1956 when the re-organisation of States took place and the lot of gullible people of the then South Canara came thrown at the mercy of the erstwhile old-Mysore rulers. People of South Canara had a moral stature of their own and this has eroded over the period since the fateful 1956. Elders in the region who had experienced the pre and post 1956 event will bear testimony to this state of affairs. At the initial stage of re-organisation, we had forthright political leaders who kept the welfare of the people of South Canara in view and made a stand for the the welfare of the people our district. But alas, that situation has completely changed and the present Yethinahole episode supported by none other than two of the political personages of this district is a glaring example of it all.
By all means, we have to be compassionate towards the brethren of arid parts of the State. But that is when out future in sufficiency of water resources is assured.
The way in which the Yethinahole project has clandestinely taken shape without taking the people of our districts into confidence is nothing but abuse of our good nature.
Therefore, at least at this stage the project has to be opposed, sinking whatever differences we have among us Thuluvas.
Let the determination of people of Tulunadu manifest itself now.
