Bengaluru, Sep 7: The heavy downpour on Sunday night that disrupted normal life in Karnataka’s State Capital that resulted in the collapse of a temporary shed at the construction site in Sampigehalli has claimed a toll of five, after two more succumbed to injuries on Monday.

According to the police, over 300 labourers from West Bengal, Jharkhand and other parts of the country were working at the under-construction residential apartment in Chokkanahalli built by Signature Construction Company.

The labourers were put up in a makeshift shed adjacent to the residential complex.

Due to heavy rain on Sunday night, the shed collapsed and several persons were trapped inside.

The Fire and Emergency Services and the police rescued seven labourers. One died on the spot when the wall collapsed.

The injured were rushed to various hospitals, where two more persons succumbed.The deceased have been identified as Ajith Pradhan (46), Mithun (19), Dulal (23), Shankar Mondal (37) and Tutal Mondal (23).

Eight persons who sustained severe injuries have been admitted to Dr Ambedkar Medical College for treatment.

Police said the labourers were not provided safety measures nor given a secure shelter to stay,

The police have booked the owner of the construction company, the site engineer, the project manager and safety supervisor under various sections of the IPC.
