Mangaluru, Sep 10: Indian Trade Union Congress (INTUC) Dakshina Kannada district president, Manohar Shetty, said that Netravi happens to be the lifeline of coastal Karnataka. He noted that the project aimed at diverting the river to the plains will not only heap miseries on the citizens living in the coast, but also will drive the workforce to the streets. Therefore, he said, there is a need to fight out the efforts to implement this project tooth and nail.

Addressing a press conference at the INTUC office at Panambur on Wednesday September 9, Shetty said that initially, the organization will contact leaders of Congress party in the state to convince them of the need to drop this project. He said that all INTUC leaders will take part in the agitation programme being held at Uppinangady on September 15. He added that a decision has been taken at the district unit meeting of INTUC to draft a programme of agitation under the guidance of leaders, M N Adyantaya and Rakesh Malli.

Shetty expressed deep concern at the unfortunate turn of events which have led to the imminent closure of Bharathi Shipyard at Tannir Bavi here. He revealed that his organization is prepared to organize fight against the closure of this concern.
