Mangaluru, Sep 10: Under instructions from the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, revenue inspector, Bharat, as well as officials of mines and geology, with the help of Ullal police, conducted a raid on a spot at the district's border at Talapady on Wednesday September 9 and found sand that had been illegally stocked there. It is said that the sand was stored there for being illegally transported to different destinations inside Kerala.

It is learnt that some people clandestinely transported sand extracted from River Netravati and other rivers, duly ensuring that their activity does not get noticed by officials, and stocked it at Talapady. It is said that this sand then used to get transported to Kerala through trucks having Kerala state registrations and permits.

The district deputy commissioner, who was alerted about this activity, conveyed this information to revenue as well as mines and geology department officials. The officials, along with Ullal police, reached the spot, and took over possession of over 20 loads of sand. They have now launched a search operation for the culprits behind this act.

The officials of mines department have begun to transport the sand so confiscated to Ullal police station. Ullal police inspector, Pavitra Teja, said that he plans to bust this racket in a few days, arrest those behind this operation, and take suitable steps against the concerned.

The officials of mines and geology department had undertaken a successful operation at Tachchani near Talapady on Monday night, and stopped illegal sand trafficking. Two trucks and a JCB had been found during this operation, all of which were handed over to the possession of Ullal police. Acting deputy director of the department, Nagendrappa, geologist, B K Murthy, assistant engineer, Mahadevappa, revenue inspector, Bharat, and other staff had taken part in this operation.
