Bengaluru, Sep 10: Prof Roddam Narasimha, DST Year of Science Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore revisited the era of computing and its impact on engineering and scientific community, especially in Aerospace and Fluid Dynamics.
Speaking at the fifth edition of two-day GARUDA NKN Partners Meet-2015 organized at Indian Institute of Science by C-DAC in Bengaluru, Prof Roddam Narasimha stressed the need for people from different technology domains such as Mathematicians, Algorithm Designers, Computer Scientists and Application Researchers to converge and collaborate closely to promote scientific research.
The next five to ten years would be very exciting in the field of Scientific Research in India, he said.
Presiding over the function, Prof N Balakrishnan, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore highlighted the dream of the Indian HPC Community that has come as realdity in the form of National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), which was envisioned with GARUDA’s experience supported by the NKN backbone.
He shed light on the Compute power demands from various scientific applications. The paradigm shifts from compute centric to data centric, emergence of GPU’s, Cloud and related technologies were crucial for increasing nation’s wealth creation as it was closely related to progress in Super Computing.
He also mentioned that the Research labs, private industries and Indian MNCs need Super Computing for their technological existence.
Senior Technical Director, NIC, Bangalore S M Shankar Raju spoke on the emergence of NKN in 2009 with the mandate to connect 1500 institutes across the country.
He indicated that as on date, capital cities of every state have been networked with the NKN. In Karnataka, NKN has connected 110 institutes to leverage e-Governance services.
NKN has been actively disseminating knowledge to rural areas, enhanced connectivity for 5600 Gram Panchayats with giga bit lanes. He informed that NIC Karnataka has rolled out various e-Governance projects like Sakala, VAT software, e-Hospital services for 32 hospitals, few pilot projects that have been widely appreciated and that benefitted the society.
Dr N Sarat Chandra Babu, Executive Director, C-DAC Bangalore welcomed the gathering and on behalf of C-DAC and NKN, profusely thanked all the dignitaries and the participants for coming together to share their thought process.
Dr Sarat highlighted the evolution and convergence of technologies like Internet of Things, Big Data, Cloud computing, Software Defined ‘Everything’, Virtualizationetc. and Grid GARUDA’s revolutionary role in all spheres.
Dr Subrata Chattopadhyay, Chief Investigator of GARUDA, thanked the distinguished guests for sharing their knowledge and their continued support and encouragement.
Over 100 delegates, participants and speakers actively involved in sharing their expertise, knowledge, setbacks, challenges and solutions specific to their domain.
