Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Sep 11: In an incident which occurred during the hearing of a case in the court complex here on Thursday September 10, the judge ordered initiation of proceedings against a witness for passing defamatory remarks against lawyers. The court asked policemen to take legal steps relating to this incident.

On Thursday, when hearing was in progress concerning a case of assault, a witness representing the defendants, who was subjected to cross questioning by a lawyer, started passing derogatory and defamatory remarks against the lawyers in general. The witness in question happens to be a senior citizen.

When the lawyer was fed up by this uncontrolled vilification which went on for long, brought this to the notice of the judge in writing. The court, taking a lenient view of the incident considering the age of the witness, asked him to tender unconditional apology. The witness obliged and sought apology as directed in writing.

The incident was treated as closed then and there. But the witness, once out of the court building but within the compound of the court, began to openly deride lawyers, it is said. The lawyers, who did not take this verbal onslaught lying down, brought this fact to the notice of the judge concerned through their association. On the basis of the complaint, the court asked the police to initiate legal action against the senior citizen.
