Chennai: Green Tribunal orders stay on Yettinahole project

Daijiworld Media Network

Chennai, Sep 16: In a relief for all those who have been protesting against the implementation of the controversial Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water Project, the National Green Tribunal, Chennai on Wednesday September 16 ordered a stay on the project.

As per the stay order, all work along the project site, both within and outside the forest area, will be suspended until September 28.

A writ petition on the Yettinahole project was filed on July 29 before the Tribunal by Bengaluru Jana Sangrama Parishat state secretary K Somashekar stating that over 600 acres of forest area would be destroyed for Yettinahole project, and that permission for the same had not been sought from the central environment ministry.

The writ petition came up for hearing on September 16 and the Tribunal ordered a stay till September 28, on the grounds that the project has been started without following guidelines.

On September 28, the case will be heard again and a final verdict will be given, said the two-member jury consisting of judges Jyothimani and Nagendran. The counsel for the government submitted a written assurance to the Tribunal that no work would be carried out on Yettinahole project as ordered.

Speaking to daijiworld, Dinesh Holla said that the Tribunal has also asked the government to submit all information regarding the Yettinahole project so that a final decision could be taken. He also said that as this is just a temporary stay, the public meet with elected representatives on 10 questions about the project scheduled for September 19 would still be held.

The nearly Rs 13,000-crore Yettinahole project, undertaken to provide drinking water to Kolar, Chikkaballapur and other districts, has been met with widespread opposition in Dakshina Kannada. On September 15, the highway at Uppinangady was blocked with around 7,000 people led by a number of leaders and prominent persons across communities raising their voice against the project. However, state and union ministers from the district have supported the project, saying they cannot go against the government and engaging in BJP-Congress blame-game.

JUST CONSIDER AVERAGE RAIN IN NETHRAVATHI BASIN =400CM
    BASIN AREA 3222 SQ KM
THEN TOTAL DOWN POUR 3222*0.004=12.88 CUBIC KM
    (35.32 tmcft = 1 cubic Km)
    12.88*35.32=455.22 TMC
I THINK TOTAL AVAILABLE WATER 400 TMC MAY CORRECT
MY OPINION ONLY TO PUMP THE RAIN WATER NOT DIVERTING IN THE ROOT
FOR ETHINEHOLE PROJECT ALSO NEED ELECTRICITY TO PUMP DAMED WATER, FORGET THE TURBINE PROVIDE OTHER SOURCE FOR ELECTRICITY JUST PUMP THE WATER FROM FROM UPPINANGADI OR FROM GUNDYA (THROUGH PROPOSED TUNNEL ROAD MAY BE BETTER) DURING RAIN SEASON, NOW A DAYS SK EXPERIENCING HEAVY FLOOD DURING RAINY SEASON BECAUSE OF HEAVILY BUILT UP AREA LIKE BUILDING AND ROADS
20 TMC IS LESS THAN 5% OF TOTAL AVAILABLE WATER
PUMPING IS LESS HARMFUL THAN DIVERTING FROM BASE.
I LOVE TOO FLORA AND FAUNA OF W GHATS

    Not 400cm, but 345.6 cm.

Entire 400cm rain should not be considered for river water calculations.
    Because:
    1. Huge amount of rain water is absorbed by the earth, which becomes available as ground water.
    2. Considerable amount of water stays on the leaves and the ground, and evaporates back.

The technical term is "runoff coefficient"

Our coastal land is highly absorbing. So you have to consider a run-off coefficient of 0.05-0.25.
    (source: http://www.lmnoeng.com/Hydrology/rational.php)
plus since the temperature is always high, so the rate of evaporation is very high.

Considering the maximum run-off coefficient in our case = 0.15 (averaging 0.05 and 0.25)
    total water available = 3222* 0.004 * 0.15 * 12.88* 35.32 = 87.94 TMC

If I consider the evaporation levels it will be much lower.

Plus, remember, this is available only at the point of joining the sea. Not before that.

Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues and freebooters. All Indian leaders will be of low caliber and men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles. A day would come when even air and water would be taxed.”
India is merely a geographical expression. It is no more a single country than the equator.

a strong message to monsters like Rai, Moily and Gowda who think they can get away with anything according to their wish. Time is not far away when these ministers will have to be 'taught' a proper lesson for wasting taxpayers money and for endangering nature

Somebody had done right thing instead of only protesting while work in progress. Hope this project scrapped and government may find alternative way to provide water to the needy. But this water is not planned for poor who thirsty but planned to build lavish city in the name of drinking water.

i think the olny solution is that system varuna (god for rain):in this method a number of turbines(hybrid of Kaplan plus flow water ) to install along river gundia & generate electricity, using the electricity pump the water from the pond (to be made near gundya at an altitude of 150 mtr)to sakalesh pur (altitude 900 mietre) from there allow the water to flow by gravity force towards kolar or any where.
when it rains the water flow through turbines and starts to generate power simultaneously the pump will start using the electricity generated by turbines, and lifts water from gundya to sakleshpur.
if there is rain in malnadu(around saklehpur and gundya)then other side(bayalu seeme) people will also get water
the key of the pump is with varuna(god for rain)
at any how river nethravthi drains nearly 400 tmc(minus a small amount utilized by mcc, mrpl,&farmers) of water annually to arabian sea. if we pumping 20 or 30 tmc of water towards bayaluseeme will not effect sk.and bayaluseeme also in our karnataka

It would be good if you can study some basics before commenting.

Kaveri basin = 81,155 square kilometers
    Kaveri length = 765 km
Kaveri total water availability = 726 TMC

Netravati basin = 1353 square miles = 3504 square kilometers.
    Netravati Length = 103 km

According to you Netravati's water availability is 400 TMC. More than half of Kaveri.

So a river with 23 times smaller basin and 7 times smaller length has almost half of Kaveri water?

Next time please think twice before commenting with false statistics.

    MR KUNG F P
RIVER KAVERY'S BASIN EVEN WIDER THAN NETHRAWATHI BUT RECEIVES LESS RAIN. MOST OF ITS BASIN COMES UNDER RAIN SHADE AREA (OTHER THAN COORG AREA)
LEAVE THE LENGTH, NILE IS THE LONGEST RIVER BUT DISCHARGES(ONLY 2830 CUBIC MTR/SEC) LESS THAN OTHER RIVERS
THE DATA GIVEN ABOVE IS BASED ON BOOK "HARIVU" PUBLISHED BY VTU BELGUAM

YOu may be right in quoting "Harivu". I heard from other sources too that they are quoting 400 TMC.

But I doubt the statistics in "Harivu" itself. My doubt is that these statistics are boosted up in order to get a go-ahead for the project. If they tell the real statistics then there won't be a big budget project, and no big budget percentage for politicians.

Living next to Netravati and seeing the problems people here are facing I have to say 400 TMC is a bit too far fetched. There is no water in Netravati in summer.

Also, people say it's only rain water and it is getting wasted - this is wrong.
More rain water joins the sea, faster the water will evaporate due to less salt content in water and result in more rains for all places. Nature's design is already fantastic. No need for all the techno circus of electrical generation and kaplan turbines.

Also the forest area sacrificed is around 600 acres. What about fresh air, medicinal plants and wild animals and birds? Only man has to survive and other animals have no right to live? How do you like if somebody destroys your home?

I completely agree with you Dr. There are plans to make Jog Falls into something like niagra falls or something of the sort. Later on they might plan sand dune rides and belly dancing also once south kanara becomes a desert.
The ultra rich who are planning this will be drinking packaged drinking water but, what about the daily wage and other little earning people will do?
This is a clear strategy to push the poor down the graves and above them will come mansions and highrises.

Drinking water for Kolar and Chickballapur and other districts is just a lame excuse. What they are drinking now in these districts?

The water is for multi-national companies to set up industries in these districts because the land is cheaper plus politicians can de-notify land. We all know how the de-notification works in Karnataka. It doesn't matter which party is in power they both can take turn in de-notifying the land. That is why they are all silent.

In some parts of the world, water is worth more than crude oil. DK is a paradise. Let's keep it that way.

It is better to the project. As such DK is facing water scarcity and this year failure of monsoon has raised a threat of drought in D K District. Is it justified in supplying water from Netravathi to Kolar, Chikaballpura and other districts which more than 400 kms away. Why can't they take water from KRS or Gorur or Bhadra Dam which are nearer to this place. Millions of rupees involved in this for swindling. That's why all politician are interested in this project, including some from DK. They have pledge to convert D K district a into a Desert.

There will certainly be a better, environment-friendly alternative to the destructive, environment-degrading Yettinahole project.

With the precious, scarce, budgetary allocation of INR 13,000 crores, it would certainly be possible to find a better way to solve the drinking water problems of Kolar, Chikkaballapur & other identified districts, without resorting to killing the Netravathi river.

Environmentalists, with the help of conservation experts from the World Bank, can get together to see if the existing streams/rivers in these districts could be linked, water tanks/reservoirs could be deepened and additional borewells could be dug on an emergency basis, to ease the drinking water problem in these districts. This could be a better alternative in the long run.
