CM asks Centre to reconsider decision on IIT in Dharwad

Says Raichur will be ideal venue for the premier institute

Bengaluru, Sep 21(DHNS): Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani to reconsider setting up the proposed Indian Institute of technology (IIT) in Dharwad and instead pick Raichur as the venue.

The Centre decided to set up the first IIT in the southern state earlier this month. While the decision made the people of Dharwad district happy and politicians belonging to Hubballi-Dharwad were busy taking credit for bringing the IIT to their place, people and elected representatives of Raichur district were disappointed and even staged protests demanding that the institute be set up in their place.

Siddaramaiah also came under attack by various organisations in Raichur (located in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region) for depriving the district of the IIT.

BJP leaders Pralhad Joshi, Jagadish Shettar and H N Ananth Kumar (all basically from Hubballi-Dharwad) took credit for getting the IIT sanctioned to the district.

In his letter, the chief minister said that the State government had shortlisted Raichur, Mysuru and Dharwad for setting up the IIT. Since it was also decided recently to set up an International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Dharwad, he felt that the proposed IIT should be set up in Raichur.

“Keeping in view this and the fact that Raichur is the district headquarters located in the Hyderabad-Karnataka backward region and enjoys special status under Article 371-J of the Indian Constitution, it would be appropriate to establish the proposed IIT at Raichur. This will help in balanced regional development to which our state is committed,” the chief minister said.

Further, the chief minister said that Karnataka would extend all necessary assistance and cooperation in establishing the IIT in Raichur. Also on Sunday, Raichur district in-charge minister Sharanprakash Patil held a meeting with elected representatives from the district here in support of their demand that the IIT should be given to the H-K region.

How does are setting an IIT improve the economic condition of the people??? From the past decade most of the projects are going to NK but still they say that there is no development. The people themselves are not ready to change.

CM sir till today you have not worked 1day development on north karnataka nor you supported HONDA company to step up there plant in DHARWAD when company was so much interested to setup and you didnot take care of them and when we (Public) went om strike you said a comment that "to give IIT its in hands of central " and when we got the approval now your again trying to move and move our city backward i dont know what problem you have in developing Hubli-Dharwad.

And also our farmers from nargund are on strike since 60days you have not stepup to support them,
rather you give a farmer family 30,000rs if he is from mysore and for northkarnataka you give 10000rs compensation is it the correct what your doing to your position, your representing Karnataka not only mysore or south karnataka.

NITK, Surathkal has grown up so much and well set up in the past 55 years. It really deserves to be upgraded to an IIT. No doubt, Surathkal would have been an ideal choice. From REC ( was only the REC in Karnataka) to NITK ( Is only the NITK in Karnataka) and now NITK to IIT.

Mangluru is notorious for rowdies who are doing rowdyism taking advantage of religious issues.

Very small time goons making a livelihood through goondaism are projecting as if they are saving religions.

Mangluru seems to have gone of out of mainstream at state level as well as national level because of this.

Setting up an IIT,unlike setting up an industrial complex, does not improve the economic conditions of a region.Question to ask is: Is it an attractive place to live and study and is it easily accessible. Raichur would score "No" on all fronts. If the state government is interested in developing North Karnataka let them create some industrial and agricultural and touristic projects there.

Dharwad is the ideal place for IIT, which is at the centre of karnataka, Raichur is almost a near to border with Telangana and always suffers with drought throughout the year. Our CM is bit lack of knowledge and if you vote with any kannadiga, they will prefer Dharwad and is an educational Hub of karnataka with University and a medical college. Please do not change with Raichur.

Jossey, please understand K'Nataka students doing IIT in Rourkela, Srinagar, Jaipur & other places....

The ion process in IIT & IIMs is very similar to deputation of Army Officers & IAS Officers...Idhaar ka udhar, udhar ka idhar...For National Integration purpose, another old Nehru Philosophy

Sad that you're still ignorant on these things

IITs are Kind of white elephants.
Expect from real estate , there is no use for any one else in this.
Generally the most of the Students and staff members are from other state and finally those who graduated also go and settle in aboard.

For Mangaloreans Dharwad is only 8 hours journey and Raichur is 14 hours journey with horrible Road. Even old Mysore area people prefer Dharwad at it is closer and more cultured and having better amenities and climate. So, Sidduji, majority of the Kannadigas prefer Dharwad which please note.
Anyway why Kannadigas should squabble among themselves for IIT ? After all the benefit of this IIT for Karnataka students and employees is very very less. Majority of the Jobs and seats for students will go to outsiders and Karnataka Govt has no say in this as IIT is autonomous.

Dharwad or Mangalore should only be the two option due to connectivity and Mangalore being developed as Educational HUB of karnataka. No politics here Mr. CM.
