Mangaluru, Sep 21: With the objective of educating the public on cancer, the Mangalore Institute of Oncology on Monday September 21 launched an awareness campaign on wheels.

The 'cancer education car' was flagged off by deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim at his office.

Speaking after the inauguration, DC Ibrahim said, "Cancer is a deadly disease. An early detection can help in saving one's life. The government fully supports the cancer awareness programme. The district administration congratulates Mangalore Institute of Oncology for initiating this awareness programme for public good. The vehicle will travel to places where people gather and educate them and clarify their doubts."

Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, director of Mangalore Institute of Oncology said, "Education is an effective way of empowering the people with knowledge for a healthy life. The vehicle will be travelling to places where crowds gather. We make use of people's free time to create awareness. Those who are interested can come and learn about cancer. The video clippings, of a duration of 10 minutes each, will provide information on all types of cancer. It is a continuous process. Medical staff are also allocated in case more clarity is needed by the people.

"Our aim is that people should be aware of cancer at an early stage so that medication can be effective. We have spent around Rs 2 lac on accessories. It is a running cost and we are happy that the government is also supporting this initiative," he added.

Dr Suresh Rao, Dr Sanath Hegde, director of Mangalore Institute of Oncology were also present.

Great to know that Oncology Institute launches mobile cancer awareness campaign. Congratulation Dr. Akbar. It was indeed a nice occasion for us classmates to meet after around 36 years at the reunion in August this year and glad that you could also make it there. All the very best.
