Mangaluru, Sep 21: The police have arrested three persons in connection with the brutal attack on Lancy D'Souza at Chembugudde under Ullal police station limits. The incident took place on September 10.

Addressing a press meet here on Monday September 21, police commissioner S Murugan said that the arrested are prime accused Choni alias Keshava Poojary (25), a resident near Ullal railway station, Prasad alias Pachu (24), a resident Mogaveerpatna, and Rakshith alias DK (22), a resident of Kapikad, Ullal. They were arresed by city crime branch (CCB) police.

Lancy D'Souza, the prime accused in the Yathish Poojary murder case, was attacked with machetes on September 10 at Chembuguddde. The assailants who were in a car purposely hit his two-wheeler, and when he fell down, they assaulted him before fleeing the spot.

Yathish Poojary had been murdered in August 2014 in a bar at Thokkottu, allegedly by Uday alias Udayraj and Lancy. The police commissioner said that the assailants attacked Lancy to take revenge for Yathish's murder.

Among the accused arrested, Choni faces charges in five cases. He is an accused in the murder of Sandeep Shetty of Someshwar in 2011, shootout at Ballalbagh targetting businessman Vijayendra Bhat, attempt to murder case at KC Road under Ullal police limits, assault case at Someshwar beach, and another case in 2013 where Goonda Act was invoked against him. After being booked under Goonda Act, he was sent to Ballari jail, and released on bail in July this year.

Another accused, Prasad alias Pachu, faces three cases. He is charged in an attempt-to-murder case in 2012 under Mangaluru north police station, and two attempt-to-murder cases under Ullal police limits in 2014.

Rakshith is an accused in the murder attempt on one Mukesh at Kumpala in January this year.

Man plotting to kill businessman arrested

In another case, the CCB police arrested Raju alias Japan Manga (24), a resident of Kavoor, for hatching a plot to kill a prominent businessman in the city.

Raju had planned to murder Prakash Pinto of Paragon Builders located at MG Road.

It is learnt that Prakash Pinto and another businessman from Moodbidri had some business related conflict, and the Moodbidri businessman had given supari to Raju to kill Pinto. Based on a complaint by Prakash Pinto, the Urva police registered a case.

The police commissioner said that three or four other persons are also involved in the case and a search for them is on. An attempt on the life of Prakash Pinto had been made earlier, but it had failed, he said.

The CCB police seized two machetes and a car from the accused.

Raju is an accused in three cases - murder of Prasanna at Paldane in 2013 under Mangaluru rural police station limits, a theft case under Suratkal police station limits in 2014, and an attempt-to-murder case in Kasargod this year.

Murugan said that though Raju has associates in Mangaluru and Shivamogga, he is not connected with the underworld.

The police commissioner also said that in the last one month, the police have arrested 22 persons in 19 cases of theft, robbery and so on and confiscated stolen items and cash worth Rs 60,91,500.

He also said that in the wake of Ganesh Chaturthi and Bakrid celebrations, the police department has held peace meetings at station levels and taken preventive measures by getting a bond signed by 120 rowdy sheeters under sections 107 109 and 110 of CrPC.

"If any untoward incident takes place, the police will take severe action," he warned, adding, "The police have done a good job and they will be rewarded appropriately."

Surprised to see why this Japan Manga is roaming freely. They have many murder cases, attempt to murder etc... And they get bail??? and they continue to do the same? where is the security or law and order. How can people feel secure or what can police do? it will be like an insult to police people. They catch and the culprit is free again within a year or two and do the same thing again and again!

It is good to see and observe that nothing escapes the alert eyes of The Police Department .. It is also evident that Mr. Murugan keeps a very close watch on his staff as well as the citizens under his jurisdiction. The result is that nothing escapes the alert eyes of the law.

I join several others in complimenting the crime department on the excellent job done.
