Bengaluru: Helmets to become compulsory for pillion riders soon

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Sep 22: The state government has decided to make wearing of helmet compulsory for the pillion rider also, it is revealed.

The government has taken measures to amend the Motor Vehicle Act related to the wearing of helmet. The road transport department has already prepared a draft proposal and has asked the public to register objections if any, within 30 days from September 18 when the draft was made public.

Presently, helmet is compulsory for two-wheeler riders in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Kalburgi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi corporation limits. In Udupi, helmets will be compulsory for students starting October 1.

The government has the intention of extending the rule to the entire state, it is learnt. As a step in the same direction, it will make helmets compulsory for pillion riders too.

It is said that even children who ride pillion will not be exempted. Keeping two helmets will become a necessity then.

Kerala, Delhi, Chandigarh, Gujarat and Maharashtra have made helmets compulsory for pillion riders. There has been demand from some quarters to do the same in Karnataka since 2013.

Good beginning but not enough. It is important for the rule to include properly secured helmets.

Every smart city with its smart people should start wearing helmets without waiting for a rule- we need to wear them for our safety not because POLICE will fine us.

Documented proof ( digital picture) as well as digital audio recording to prove culpability .

With this proof - the DL should be suspended for 6 months.
Which is better - losing life is better or loosing DL for a while is better. If you feel uncomfortable with helmet do not use a 2 wheeler.

The only people unhappy are going to be the certain " Doctors"

Let's follow this rule for our safety, however if you find any potholes on the road then let's ensure we keep a big portrait of Mr Sid in that pothole with dong dung on his face..

DEAR READERS, PLEASE NOTE THAT A 2 WHEELER IS NOT A FAMILY VEHICLE. IT IS MEANT FOR TWO PEOPLE ONLY. TWO HELMETS CAN BE EASILY KEPT ON A BIKE OR A SCOOTER IN VIEW OF SAFETY. MORE THAN TWO SHOULD USE AN AUTO RICKSHAW OR ANY OTHER PUBLIC TRANSPORT. ALL SAID AND DONE WEARING HELMET BY BOTH RIDERS SHOULD BE MADE MANDATORY.

Very good move ???I have to purchase 3 helmets one for me,one for wife and other one for my child.I have also purchased 3 locks to secure the helmets to my bike, stops from stealing. My wife decided to put some shopping bags and rain coat and stuff in the helmets while its not in use while driving without child. So do not mind if you need more space and keep safe distance from my bike because there are 2 helmets on either side of my bike.
donot worry about bad roads, anyway 3 wheels and four wheels make their own ways for driving.Pathholes? Donot worry, now we have motor bike ambulances to assist if there is accident ! Dear politicians and concerned officials, first make sure people know what driving means.Way people drive no one cares !No one obeys laws anymore.Look at the cars parked at the school roads,no one stops them.why? I am saying helmets are good Idea.but first correct our traffic problems and control bad driving, specially on highways.Make proper footpath, remove the toll collection gates and then do the needful.Mangalore has become most dangerous place now, people, cars, bikes, driving and what not.God help us

First focus on get rid of the numerous potholes .
Secondly ensured the quality of material used for making roads is good and that it last for atleast 3 seasons.
Thirdly ensure that Public Transport System is improved and thus reduce the number of private vehicles.
There is joke which says when a Road is laid , there are supposed to be 4 layers of Tar .
1)The First is for the Minister, 2)the Second for the Engineer , 3)the Third for the Contractor. 4)The consumer gets the only the last and thinnest layer !!!

Better late than never. Finally the government is taking a sensible decision. After all both are riding at the same speed and have the same risk. Who makes money out of this rule is immaterial but the rule is long overdue and is a great decision. Even Srilanka has this rule for a long time.

BY USING HELMETS DEATH RATES ARE MORE IN SOUTH. WHERE AS MUMBAI NO ONE BOTHERED SAFETY HELMETS & FUNNY THING...DEATH RATES ARE JUST NOTHING. BETTER CHANGE RULES...DRIVE WITHOUT HELMET & REACH SAFE HOME.

Better late than never!! It's really a good move to make Helmet compulsory for 2 wheel riders. But that does not excuse the Concerned Authority for the very bad Roads in our cities, particularly in Bengaluru. Bad Contractors should be black listed & corrupt Officers should be punished.

There should be One Country - One Rule..

not only city areas make it compulsory even in villages also, so all life will be safe....

Make sure that they dont wear safety helmets which are used by labourers in construction sites.

Instead it is better to have body covers for two wheelers (like cars), so that individual inconvenience can be avoided and more safety can be ensured.
It also can show clear identify the riders.

1.Some people need 'helmets' in their
    homes also. Is it not?
    2. In any case feast for 'helmet' companies and this is sure to boost
    some corrupt minister's kitty.
3.While these useless people make laws..We also should make laws..that there will'compulsorily be no pot holes on roads..drainage will not be spilling over onto roads- and all that stuff'...
Who are these people to dictate terms to us and do nothing on their part??
I think we citizens should stop paying taxes and protest against any Government apathy...

The Decision of Helmets for both the riders is RIGHT. There are other issues need to be addressed.

    1. We have seen more than 2 persons traveling in bikes. How many helmets to be purchased ? What about kids ? Instead Helmets for all at home may be right. (Ha... Ha... )

    2. Indian roads are not suitable for 2 wheelers. No space on sideways and Four wheelers DON"T BOTHER about the safety of 2 wheelers.

    3. Is Bike a handy and more economical vehicle or a TOY for teenagers ? Nowadays teenagers use Bikes to show their fancy skills keeping pedestrians / other motorists and their parents heartbeat in their hands. Is Simply running the bikes for NO REASON required ? Isn't it increase the national fuel consumption for NO OUTCOME ? They have the RIGHT and their parents might have money. Other than these 2 things, is it justified ? One can see teenagers racing the bikes in utmost speed and chatting with friends in a common meeting point for hours together and returning in the same supersonic speed. All these show for what sake ? Parents are handicapped in present situation. Children win against their parents decisions. Don't we need a policy to tie this unnecessary bike ride to a work to show or some reasonable thing like they should be made to move for a reasonable PURPOSE ? Difficult to implement I agree. But some thing should be done to avoid wastage of resources.

    4. Our Bike making companies now have taken their ideas from PHANTOM or SPIDER-MAN serials or comics. Somehow they want to sell their bikes to MAD teenagers. Otherwise why that unnecessary shapes or useless attachments and illegal or unnecessarily raised seats ? Govt authorities and Transport authorities only know to disturb the common man. Why they can't catch these MAD designers by their collars ? Why can't they tell these designs were NOT ESSENTIAL or PROBLEMATIC ?

We need freedom to live but not at the cost of other lives.

    Regards,

Sidhu still believes that the deaths on road accidents are because of riders not wearing helmets!!
Its not the poor road conditions that cause accidents!!!
