Udupi: Locals have 'whale' of a time as fisherman nets huge shark

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP/HB)

Udupi, Sep 23: There was excitement at Malpe harbour here on Wednesday September 23 after a fisherman made a huge catch during a fishing expedition into the deep sea.

The fisherman caught a huge whale shark in his nets.

The shark, weighing nearly 2,500 kg and 35 feet in length, had to be pulled ashore using a crane.

As news got around, a large number of curious people flocked to the spot to see the rare catch.

It is said that as most of its body is made of water, it is not suitable for consumption and does not fetch a price in the local market. Hence, it was later thrown back into the sea.

As per Wikipedia, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest known extant fish species. The whale shark is found in open waters of the tropical oceans and warm temperate seas.

Hope the fish is not dead?
The rope from which it is dangling looks the once which can make most damage!

Hope next time our valued fishermen will not bring such beautiful creature to the shore. Just release it immediately as its of no value or use to human consumption . But for the eco system!!

what beautiful fish. should have been released into the water as soon as it was identified. fishermen will at least no that whether a fish is consumable or not. i think he was expecting cash price for his accidental catch.
sad that a vulnerable sea creature got killed unnecessarily and again thrown back into the sea

This is a beautiful fish. Must have been caught by accident. I am sure our brethren in the fishing community are good in preserving marine life. Yes, educating them of this species’ vulnerability is important, as mentioned by others.
The species is listed in the Conservation of Migratory sharks treaty and India is a signatory. India has banned all fishing, selling, importing, and exporting of whale sharks for commercial purposes and they are currently listed as a vulnerable species.

How can they kill a whale shark which is an endangered species ..,The moment the fisherman knew hes caught a whale shark it SHOULD have been released..

This shows Govt Fisheries dept have not given any information to fishermen about endangered species..

Whale Shark is not in the list of endangered species. It is under Vulnerable species.

They should have not thrown it back to the sea. They should have buried it. That is process what we should do.
