Mangaluru, Sep 24: Muslims who congregated at famous Idgah Maidan on Light House Hill in city and also at other mosques celebrated Eid-ul-Azha (Bakri-Eid) with gaiety, devotion and in a spirit of loyalty on Thursday September 24 . Thousands of people from all over the city and outskirts from all walks of life, were seen gathered at various prayer places in city for the namaaz.

Immediately after the namaaz, people were seen exchanging the festival greetings, ‘Eid Mubarak’, by embracing one another and shaking hands. Muslim brethren visit each other's homes during the day, to exchange pleasantries and to show their mutual affection and share happiness.

As per scholars, the main purpose of Bakri-Eid is reiteration of devotion to the divine rule. The festival is a commemoration of Prophet Abraham's unflinching faith and devotion to Allah's commandments, Muslims are expected to show the same spirit when they celebrate Bakri-Eid.

As per Old Testament Chapter of Bible, God Tested Abraham (Ibrahim)'s faith on Him and Ordered him to Sacrifice his Only Beloved Son Issac on the Mount in his Dreams. Accordingly Abraham left his Home along with his only beloved son Issac to Sacrifice him on the Mount directed by God. It is at the time of Sacrificing his Son, God ordered him to put down his Sword and do no Harm on his Son as Abraham's actions were directed to the Sacrifice demanded by God to test his unconditional faith on Him. Thus, God blessed Abraham (Ibrahim) still more and to the Ages to come as a Father of Righteousness and Obedience and Abraham (Ibrahim) a Great Prophet of all the Ages Remains as a Forefather of Righteousness for All specially for the Christians and Muslim brethren's faith.

Greeting of Bakrid Festival to All my Muslims Brethren as well as a Call to Christians to remember the Great Sacrifice which Abraham had set to be faithful to God the Almighty.

One of the main trials of Abraham's life was to face the command of God to sacrifice his dearest possession, his son. The son is not named in the Quran, but most modern Muslims believe it to be Ishmael. Upon hearing this command, he prepared to submit to God's will. During this preparation, Satan (Shaitan) tempted Abraham and his family by trying to dissuade them from carrying out God's commandment, and Abraham drove Satan away by throwing pebbles at him. In commemoration of their rejection of Satan, stones are thrown at symbolic pillars signifying Satan during the Hajj rites.

When Abraham was 99, God decided to test his faith in public. Abraham had a recurring dream, in which God commanded him to offer up for sacrifice – his son, whom God had granted him after many years of deep prayer. Abraham knew that the dreams of the prophets were divinely inspired, and one of the ways in which God communicated with his prophets. When the intent of the dreams became clear to him, Abraham decided to fulfill God's command and offer his son for sacrifice.

Although Abraham was ready to sacrifice his dearest for God's sake, he could not just bring his son to the place of sacrifice without his consent. His son had to be consulted as to whether he was willing to give up his life in fulfillment of God's command. This consultation would be a major test of his son's maturity in faith love and commitment for God willingness to obey his father and readiness to sacrifice his own life for the sake of God.

Abraham presented the matter to his son and asked for his opinion about the dreams of slaughtering him. His child did not show any hesitation or reservation even for a moment. He said, "Father, do what you have been commanded. You will find me, Insha'Allah (God willing), to be very patient." His mature response, his deep insight into the nature of his father’s dreams, his commitment to God, and ultimately his willingness to sacrifice his own life for the sake of God were all unpriced

It is indeed good to see people from all segments of life and people from different denominations assembling together on the festive occasion.

It is our obligation to respect all religions and all people. Here in the assembly one can perceive a combination of all.

Good to see that Mr. Ibrahim playing a prominent role in the prayers. It is said that the main purpose of Bakri-Eid is reiteration of devotion to the divine rule.

I join the chorus of all like minded people in saying ED Mubarak to our Muslim brothers.
